BREAKING NEWS: BANAL GETS NEW FOE!
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 04 Sep 2007
Hot prospect AJ 'Bazooka' Banal will face a new opponent in Genaro Camargo for the vacant WBO Youth Super Flyweight title instead of the previously reported Jovany Soto on September 30 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
In a message sent to promoter exemplar Sammy ?Don King? Gello-ani, Soto manager Francisco Landedros said that the Mexican Boxing Federation (MBF) did not allow Soto to fight in the Philippines because of his scheduled defense not later than September 28 in Mexico City.
?If he fights in the Philippines, they will suspend him and strip him of his titles.? Soto is currently the defending Boxing Commissions Federation (Fecombox) and National Mexican super flyweight champion.
A qualifier to the WBO youth super flyweight title, the 21-year-old Genaro Camargo parades a menacing record of 14 wins and 2 losses of which 8 came by way of knock-out all within 3rd round. In less than 3 minutes in the first round, he brought to the canvas Mexicans Manuel Pinzon, Javier Castro, and most recently Jorge Lopez.
Camargo was in fact scheduled to fight Mexican Carlos Ya?ez (13-0-0, 10) on Sept 14 but decided to forego for a chance to take on a more formidable fighter in Banal. Apparently for Camargo, it is not just the title but the fight itself because he is after the world ranking of Banal. At 3 years older, he is expected to show more punching power against Banal.
Meanwhile, Banal (14-0-1, 11) has stated he is ready to fight anybody put in front of him.
In the main card, Donnie Nietes (21-1-3, 13) topbills in a fight against Pornsawan Kratingdaeggym (20-0-0, 15) of Thailand for the vacant WBO minimum weight crown.
