EYE SPECIALIST SAYS GORRES MAY STILL FIGHT ON AUGUST 11

PhilBoxing.com

The eye specialist who performed laser surgery to correct a tiny tear in the retina in the eye of Z “The Dream” Gorres says the flashy southpaw may still fight in the World Cup in Sacramento on August 11 but indications are he will not fight.

Dr. Steven Steinschriber told Michael Aldeguer who is handling the ALA Gym fighters, that the laser he did Saturday was “supposed to protect the eye and cure it in sixteen days but he would know if Gorres can fight on August 11 after checking him out on August 6.”

Aldeguer also quoted Dr. Steinschriber as saying he “will not guarantee anything.”

The youthful Aldeguer, son of respected boxing patron and owner of the ALA Gym, Tony Aldeguer, said he feels it would be “too late to decide by August 6 because it will keep everyone hanging.” Aldeguer said he still has to meet with international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz after Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez talks to the eye specialist.

Aldeguer plans to talk to his father, trainer Edito “Ala” Villamor and Gorres himself before making a final decision on Monday. Gorres has said he is prepared to accept any decision made by Tony Aldeguer because he is confident it will be in his best interests even as he indicated he is resigned to the fact that he may not be able to fight on August 11.

The small tear in the retina was discovered during a routine medical check up conducted on the seven Filipino boxers scheduled to battle Mexican opponents at the Arco Arena in the eagerly awaited “World Cup”, prompting the California Commission to withhold approval of the IBF super flyweight eliminator between Gorres and Gerson Guerrero. Plans are for former IBF flyweight challenger Diosdado Gabi who was stopped by previously undefeated Vic Darchinyan to replace Gorres and to trim the number of fights in the World Cup to six.

Trainer Edito “Ala” Villamor In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today last Friday said Gorres was “depressed” after respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer called up Gorres and broke the sad news to him. The flashy southpaw reportedly cried his heart out because he was eagerly looking forward to the fight and a chance to help the Philippines win the World Cup.

Noted eye specialist Dr. Arnold Salud of the American Eye Center asked us to tell Gorres “not to be depressed because the tear can be repaired and he could fight again” hopefully within a few months.

When we spoke to Gorres after he had recovered from the painful news he said “these are trials for me Sir. Maybe God wants to see how strong I am. Maybe God is protecting me, who knows.” However, Gorres said he was confident of overcoming his setbacks and continuing his career until he fulfills his dream of becoming a world champion. He said “I am only 25 and have many years ahead of me” adding with a laugh “I am a good boy Sir, I have no chicks or other bad habits.”

The Gorres incident added to the earlier depressing news that doctors had discovered a tiny blood clot outside the brain of Czar Amonsot following his gallant stand in a brutal WBO lightweight title fight with Michael Katsidis last Sunday and Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer said the Filipino southpaw would probably not be allowed to fight in Las Vegas again. Amonosot who checked out of the Valley Medical Center after he was given a clean bill of health by Dr. Debra Nelson is expected aboard the Philippine Airlines flight from Los Angeles this morning. Dr. Nelson said Amonosot should rest for three to six months and was optimistic that he could become a world champion some day.
