As Katsidis Tries to Redeem Australia, Amonsot Ready to Add Glory to RP

PhilBoxing.com

Amonsot (L) and Katsidis tangles on July 21.

The battle on July 21 between reigning WBA lightweight interim titlist Michael Katsidis and challenger Czar Amonsot will see two protagonists with vastly differing purposes for their native countries.

Queenslader Katsidis, who will be making his American debut, will try to redeem Australia's lost pride in boxing following the big loss of IBF flyweight champ Vic Darhinyan, the Sydney-based ex-champ who was exposed by Amonsot's compatriot Nonito Donaire. Another Australian, Lovemore N'dou, lost his title recently.

"With multi-world title winning Manny Pacquiao widely regarded as the sport’s most exciting fighter and another Filipino Ranee Ganoy recently toppling Australia’s former IBF super featherweight champion Robbie Peden, the Philippines is emerging as a genuine international boxing force," said The Border Mail.

Katisidis, described as fit and focused for his titular defense, will be facing a fighter who is hungry for recognition and who is out to extend the Philippines' winning run.

"We expect a really tough fight from this young Filipino," said Katsidis’s trainer Brendon Smith in an interview with The Border Mail.

"I expect him to grow an extra arm and leg in this fight being a title fight," Smith added.

"In my first time fighting in front of an American audience, I will show the fans who is the new hottest fighter in America. While training for a fight, I predict 12 tough rounds and that the fight will be the hardest one of my life. I always plan on going the distance and my trainer emphasizes on learning the ability to adapt to anything that may happen in the ring. I don't set predictions for a fight. I have respect for my opponent, but my experience and power will be too much for him [Amonsot]," chimed in Katsidis.

Amonsot, meanwhile, has kept himself busy at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, with more than 100 rounds of sparring under him as he goes into the fight.

The Bohol native Amonsot, a member of the famed ALA Boxing Gym, will attempt to become the country's third world title-holder after Florante Condes and Nonito Donaire.
