UV GREEN LANCERS ROUT USC WARRIORS By Michael Kenji Izumi PhilBoxing.com Tue, 22 Sep 2015 TEAM STANDINGS UV - 9-2 USC - 9-2 SWU - 7-4 UC - 4-6 USJ-R - 4-6 CIT-U - 5-7 USPF - 0-11 CEBU CITY -- In a game that was expected to be an intensely competitive affair, ten-time champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers routed the University of San Carlos Warriors, 74-43 in the 2nd round of eliminations of the 15th season of Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum on Sunday. From the opening tip-off the Green Lancers launched a blistering attack to race to 31-13 start and a 44-19 halftime lead as they almost totally shut down the inside presence of USC's Cameroonian import Shooster Olago by switching UV's defensive trio of Arvie Caba?ero, Alwin Aguirre and the other Cameroonian import Steve Akomo, on him. The Green Lancers did the same against the outside shooters of the Warriors as their pesky defense forced the Warriors to shoot a dismal 1out of 21 attempts from behind the arc. The Warriors staged a minor rally in the third quarter as they cut the lead to 19, 58-39 but the Green Lancers countered with a 9-2 run capped by Alfred Codilla's 3-pointer to thwart any hopes the Warriors had of coming back. Codilla, with 18 points and 2 rebounds was named the "Best Player of th Game" by Viva Sports Panelists TV panelists Rico Navarro and Sandi Grumo. Leonard Santillan had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists; while Akomo had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Shooster Olago was the only USC Warriors player in double figures with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The 43 points that USC scored was the lowest this season. In the Juniors Division the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu ended their semifinal round in dramatic fashion as they come back from a 7-point deficit with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game to beat the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors 57-54. Reserve guard Patrick Wilson Yu came to the rescue as he single handedly put on an 8-0 run capped by a baseline jumper with 1:02 remaining in the game. He was named the "Best Player of the Game" with 10 points, including 2 out of 3 from 3-point range and grabbed 2 rebounds. No Baby Warrior scored in double-figures as Jan Josehn Mangaron and Alje Mendez scored 9 points apiece for USC, where the team went winless in the semifinal round. In the 2nd game, the University of Cebu Junior Webmasters rallied in the fourth quarter to escape with a 62-58 victory and joined the Magis Eagles in the finals. Luigi Kondrad Gabisan had his best game of the season and won the "Best Player of th Game" with his double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds, while spitfire Froilan Mangubat scored 14 points and Jason Florence Abejo scored 11 points, along with his 5 points in the last 2 minutes which proved to be the pivotal point for the Junior Webmasters. UV's Raul Jancork Cabahug had his usual superb performance as he scored 34 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and 2 blocks but his effort went for naught as his supporting cast failed to produce major points throughout the game.
