COURT ORDERED MEDIATION BETWEEN TOP RANK AND GOLDEN BOY WILL BE ON SATURDAY By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 13 Jun 2007 Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer says the court ordered mediation involving Golden Boy and Top Rank's Bob Arum will take place this Saturday in Los Angeles. Schaefer told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that Golden Boys "entire legal team will be present with me." There is a system in place in California where the parties involved in a lawsuit are required to attend a court ordered mediation. The mediation involves the case filed by Golden Boy against Bob Arum for “tortuous interference” in their contract with Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao. Schaefer informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that " it is a forum in front of a retired judge where the parties will try to resolve their differences." He said the result will “either be a mutually acceptable resolution or if this is not the case, then the lawsit will continue.” Arum has on several innstances referred to the lawsuits as "insane" and pushed for a settlement which he said would save both parties millions of dollars. However, Golden Boy believes it has a strong case while Schaefer has been visibly angered by derogatory statements made against him by Arum including reference to Schaefer as a Nazi Swiss banker. Should the mediation efforts fail then the case will go to trial at the beginning of October. In the meantime Pacquiao will face a battery of crack lawyers when his deposition is taken today in Los Angeles. The Golden Boy attorney is Jeff Spitz. Schaefer revealed that the "legendary Bertram Fields and of course Judd Burstein" will be present. Burstein, acknowledged as a crack sports lawyer who handled Pacquiao's case against former promoter Murad Muhammad which resulted in an out-of-court settlement recently joined the Golden Boy legal team. Pacquiao's deposition will be taken in connection with the legal battle between Golden Boy and Top Rank which was caused by Pacquiao who, after signing a seven-fight contract with Golden Boy Promotions in mid-September last year and receiving $500,000, signed a four-fight contract with Arum and received $1 million some two months later and received $1 million.. Golden Boy filed a case against Arum in Los Angeles while Arum asked a court in Las Vegas to rule on which contract was valid and binding. The lawsuits were subsequently consolidated and would be tried in Los Angeles which has been interpreted by some as an initial victory for Golden Boy. However, two attempts to prevent the Pacquiao-Jorge Solis fight taking place under Top Rank Promotions in San Antonio, Texas last April were denied by the courts which Arum claimed was a clear victory for him.
