USC WARRIORS OVERCOME UV GREEN LANCERS IN EXCITING BATTLE OF UNBEATEN TEAMS

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY: In an exciting battle of unbeaten teams the Universiry of San Carlos Warriors overcame ten-time champions University of Visayas Green Lancers 79-69 on Saturday night in the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum

USC anchored by prolific scorers, import Shooster Olago and Ian Tagapan and rebounding demon Charles Pepito proved to be the key players in the Warriors fifth straight win while handing the Green Lancers their first loss of the season.

The Warriors started off aggressively and raced to a 12-2 lead while the Green Lanxcers groped to find their shooting touch.

UV rallied behind Alfred Codilla who scored 11 points to bring the Green Lancers to within one point at 16-17 with just under three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first quarter but the Warriors kept their poise and led 23-20 at the end of the first quarter.

Another bigf 14-4 run helped the USC Warriors establish a double-digit lead at the start of the 2nd quarter but the UV Green Lancers clawed back with a 13-2 charge to end the first half with the Warriors ahead by a mere 2 points, 39-37.

Both teams waxed hot during the first half, with USC shooting 47% from the field while UV shot 54%.

Talented Franz Arong tied the game for the first time with a jumper early in the third before Tagapan exploded with three triples and two jump shots to re-establish the Warriors double-digit lead even as skipper Nico Magat and Cameroonian Olago joined the scoring spree that helped the Warriors to take control.
.
In a nip and tuck fourth quarter the Warriors played it smart in an effort to protect their lead while the Green Lancers tried their best to turn things around but were thwarted by Pepito?s domination of the boards which gave the Warriors a huge 33-21 advantage in rebounds.

The early foul troubles of UV import, center Steve Cedric Akomo and Alwin Aguirre who fouled out as early as midway in the fourth quarter after committing three straight fouls and the failure of former Gilas U-18 member Leonard Santillan at both ends of the court created problems for the UV Green Lancers.
.
Tagapan, who had 13 points in the third period finished with a game-high 22 points. Olago whose 20 points was highlighted by two slam dunks carried the scoring load while Magat contributed 14 points and Pepito added 11 points and grabbed 10 boards.

Because of his stellar play in the 2nd half Tagapan got the nod of Viva Sports TV panelists Rico Navarro and Sandi Grumo as the ?Best Player of the Game? scoring 18 points in the second half on 9-of-16 shooting from the field.

Codilla was the leading scorer for the Green Lancers 18 points,. Arong made 13, Akomo finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and eight rejections, while June Kent Manzo finished with 11 points.

Meanwhile, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats scored its second win in five games following an 85-62 win over the winless University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers.

Things got nasty before the end of the third period when CUR-U?s Joerio Kristoffer Mumar was thrown out after he punched USPF?s Lyndon Colina which almost ended in a free for all befire cooler heads prevailed.

Joshua dela Cerna was named best player with 21 points and 7 rebounds and Allan Dimco scored 12 points for the 2-4 Wildcats. USPF's Brantford Borces led them with 17 points and 3 rebounds for the 0-5 Panthers.
