UV GREEN LANCERS IN PULSATING COMEBACK WIN OVER USJ-R JAGUARS

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY -- Just when most fans thought that the game was over, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers came back in quick and dramatic fashion to overcome a 7-point deficit and score a pulsating 89-82 victory over USJ-R Jaguars in the 15th season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) at the Cebu Coliseum on Thursday.

The multi-titled Green Lancers were down 73-80 following a layup by Jude Dinolan with 1:35 left in the game but the Green Lancers displaying the heart of a champion clawed back with a sizzling 16-2 run and a stifling pressure defense to force a series of turnovers by the Jaguars which was further hurt by the fouling out of key players Mark Labares, Kevin Villafranca, Nelvin Navarra and Edmundo Bayhonan down the stretch.

Cameroonian import Steve Cedrick Akomo and Alfred Codilla came into their own to combine for 14 points in the dying minutes of the game which included a clutch block by Akomo on a Jaybie Mantilla layup with under 30 seconds to play.

Talented Franz Arong who was named the ?Best Player of the Game? by Viva Sports TV panelists Rico Navarro and Sandi Grumo finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in a fine all-round performance while Akomo scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds although he shot poorly from the free throw line converting only 6 of 18 while overall the Green Lancers also fared badly making only 23 of 52 free throws awarded them.

Batang Gilas Under 18 player Leonard Santillan also scored in double figures with 16 points while the Jaguars were led by Mantilla with 17 points in addition to pulling down 5 rebounds while former CEU Pink Scorpion standout Miguel Gastador finished with 12 points, 3 steals and 5 blocks in a losing cause.

In the junior division the Cebu Eastern College Dragons won over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers 59-43 with Mark Roa leading all scorers with 21 points.
