UNIVERSITY OF CEBU SPOILS RETURN OF UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES FOUNDATION

PhilBoxing.com

Cebu City: The University of Cebu Webmasters spoiled the return of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers after a one year absence with an overwhelming 91-69 victory at the historic Cebu Coliseum on Tuesday evening.

The victory was the first for UC which lost 68-85 to the University of San Jose Recoletos Jaguars on opening day and were quick to erase the memory of that loss in the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc., or Cesafi, in a game telecast by Viva Sports over IBC 13 at 7:00 p.m. yesterday.

Anchored on their constant pressure defense which forced a series of turnovers that had new head coach Albert Alocillo of the Panthers groping for answers, the Webmasters raced to a 25-11 lead at the end of the first quarter which ballooned to a 74-29 advantage at the half.

Balanced scoring was a key for the Webmasters who were led by Melvin Butohan who did not see action against the Jaguars last Saturday as he was penalized by the team for his failure to attend practice but came back with a vengeance to score 23 points which included five big triples.

Team captain Clint Suelto who had 10 points and 5 assists was named ?Best Player? of the game by TV panelists Rico Navarro and Sandi Grumo while the three other players who finished with double figures were Justine Dacalos with 12 points, Garciano Puerto Jr., 11 and Filvenson Culango with 10.

Brantford Borces led the Panthers with 15 points while rookies Mhike Patalinghug and Jaymes Villamor combined for 25 points in a losing effort.

In the juniors division defending champions Sacred Heart School ? Ateneo de Cebu scored a comfortable 68-55 win over the Baby Panthers with Bacolod City native Eroll Pastor leading a balanced attack with 14 points while Travis Mantua and Gilas Pilipinas Under 16 member Led Cedrick Colonia added 11 points.
