CEBU CITY -- The collegiate basketball scene was once centered too much around Metro Manila with the bigger leagues like the NCAA and the UAAP. Now, the rest of the country and the viewing public will now get to see first hand the basketball action in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) which the league has produced big names such as June Mar Fajardo, Greg Slaughter, JR Qui?ahan, Eliud Poligrates, to name a few. The league will parade twelve member schools this year like Cebu Doctors' University, Cebu Eastern College, Cebu Institute of Technology-University, Don Bosco Technology Center, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, Southwestern University, University of Cebu, University of San Carlos, University of San-Jose Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines Foundation, University of the Visayas and Velez College. In this year's edition of the CESAFI basketball tournament, the league will have 7 teams for college like CIT-U Wildcats, SWU Cobras, UC Webmasters, USC Warriors, USJ-R Jaguars, USPF Panthers and UV Green Lancers; while the other 9 teams that will be playing for the high school division are CEC Dragons, CIT-U Wildkittens, DBTC Baby Greywolves, SHS-AdC Magis Eagles, UC Junior Webmasters, USC Baby Warriors, USJ-R Baby Jaguars, USPF Baby Panthers and UV Baby Lancers. During the press conference last Wednesday, July 29 at the Cebu Parklane Int'l Hotel, the CESAFI, along with Viva Communications and IBC network joined forces to air all of the main games nationwide and will be shown primetime on a one-day delay basis through channel 13. In a statement, Viva Communications Vice-President of Sports Ronnie Nathalielsz said that the future stars of Philippine basketball lies in the southern part of the country. "Before, we used to hear June Mar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter prior to seeing them in the PBA. Now, people nationwide will able to see the caliber of these CESAFI players before they join into the bigger leagues. They will be able to see the fiercely-intense basketball competition, which is the key to success for CESAFI", said Nathalielsz, who will also be a part of the TV crew. Aside from IBC, the CESAFI has also forged a partnership with Viva Sports for production and marketing for further media mileage. CESAFI Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy, Jr. said he was looking forward into the season with very high hopes, and he was desired on having nationally-televised games since becoming the league's commissioner last 2001. "The CESAFI richly deserves this meaningful tie-up not only for being one of the longest-existing inter-school leagues in the country, but also for its unflinching commitment to provide the Cebuanos a classic and highly-entertaining hardcourt action through the years. Since its inception decades ago, basketball in Cebu has been the breeding ground of some of the country's hoop superstars in the mold of Julian Macoy, Ramon Fernandez, Abet Guidaben, Manny Paner, Elmer "Boy" Cabahug, and Al Solis of the olden days and the present crop of PBA talents in June Mar Fajardo, Greg Slaughter, Dondon Hontiveros and Brian Heruela to name a few. "It's about high time that the CESAFI will be made known and accessible to fans across the country through Viva being its TV partner," Tiukinhoy said. The opening ceremonies will start today at 1:00 PM at the Cebu Coliseum along with Miss CESAFI 2015 and the annual Grand Palabas; followed with two basketball games capped off with a seniors division match between University of Cebu Webmasters and University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars.
