WBO PRESIDENT ?PACO? VALCARCEL WILL BE FIGHT SUPERVISOR OF NIETES-RODRIGUEZ TITLE SHOWDOWN; RUSSELL MORA IS REFEREE

PhilBoxing.com

Valcarcel.

No less than World Boxing Organization president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel will be the Fight Supervisor when the longest reigning Filipino world champion and current light flyweight king Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes defends his title against mandatory challenger Francisco Rodriguez of Mexico at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu on July 11.

WBO Asia Pacific head Leon Panoncillo will also be present.

Referee for the fight will be Russell Mora, an outstanding former amateur boxer who in 1980 was the Alburquerque, New Mexico Regional and State Golden Gloves champion and was also the 1981 Regional Golden Gloves champion.

Boxrec.com said Russell Mora is the son of boxer Richie Mora while his brothers Adrian and Anthony Mora were also boxers.
Among the major fights this year in which Mora was the third man in the ring were the Leo Santa Cruz ? Jose Cayetano ten round bout which the super bantamweight champion won by a shutout.

Mora was also referee in the ten round bout of Filipino Ranee ?KO Kid? Ganoy who used to live and fight out of Australia but has moved to the US and now lives in New Mexico.

Ganoy lost a majority decision to Josh Torres on April 11 this year.

Mora who refereed the WBO/WBA bantamweight title fight between five division world champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire and Mexico?s Fernando Montiel which in which Donaire scored a devastating 2nd round TKO at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas came under fire for failing to stop the bout when Montiel hit the canvas when nailed by a left hook and his legs began to quiver much like Ricky ?The Hitman? Hatton did when Manny Pacquiao sent him crashing to the canvas.
Former boxer, radio talk show host and hard-hitting writer Pedro Fernandez blasted Mora when he allowed the concussed Montiel to rise to his feet and continue, allowing Donaire to land a few ?unnecessary? shots before he stopped the contest.

In fairness to referee Mora he quickly realized what had happened and called a halt. The fact that Montiel is still fighting and winning indicates that the slightly delayed stoppage didn?t do irreparable damage.

In fact Montiel has won 10 of his last 11 fights since the loss to Donaire and last March 14 scored a ten round unanimous decision overt one-time Filipino prospect Jun Doliguez in a featherweight bout in Tijuana.

Named as judges for the Nietes-Rodriguez bout which was postponed for one week from July 4 to 11 after the Mexican reportedly suffered a slightly strained ankle were Patricia Morse Jarman of Las Vegas who also does MMA fights, Robert Hecko of Chicago and Benoit Roussel of Canada.

Jarman has been a judge in nine fights this year among the more notable being the Vasyl Lomachenko ? Gamalier Rodriguez clash which Lomachenko the former outstanding Olympic champion won by a 9th round TKO.

At the time of the stoppage Jarman had Lomachenko clearly ahead 78-71 at the end of the eighth at the MGM Grand Garden Arena last May 2.

She was also a judge in Adrien Broner?s shutout win over John Molina Jr last March 7.

Roussel was recently a judge in the action-packed battle between David Lemieux who beat Hassan N? Dam handily.

Roussel scored the fight 115-109 for Lemieux which was concurred in by Vincent Dupas while the third judge Ron McNair also scored it for Lemieux 114-110.

Chicago?s Robert Hecko?s last assignment was in the Badou Jack ? Anthony Dirrell WBC super middleweight title fight last April 24 which Badou Jack won by a majority decision in a close fight where Hubert Minn had Badou Jack winning 115-112, Rey Danseco of the Philippines who now lives in California 115-113 while Hecko scored it an even 114-114.
