AVILA WINS OVER RUIZ AT THE BELASCO THEATER

PhilBoxing.com

Avila and Ruiz in action.
Downtown LA:- The May 2015 version of the monthly fight card at this historic venue dubbed as LA Fight Club concluded moments ago. The promotion is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in cooperation with its partners, Corona Beer and Mexico Tourism. It was covered live by FoxSportsNetwork.

In the main event, Fairfield, CA native and undefeated super bantamweight Manuel Avila (17-0-0, 7KO) kept his record squeaky clean by scoring a one side unanimous decision over a very determined Robert Garcia-trained, Erik Ruiz (13-3-0, 6KO) of Oxnard.

Ruiz tried all night to bring the fight to Avila with the hope that he may score his 7th KO but the very polished Avila did not allow him to attain his goals. Avila took all that Ruiz can give and dished out his own version of effective counter punching often beating Ruiz to the punch.

Even the constant urging of Robert Garcia to Ruiz to continue to throw was all for naught. Ruiz, tonight was just not in the same class as Avila.

The scores were all 100-90 clearly indicating that Ruiz has a lot to do to catch up with the accomplishments of Avila.

A an 8-round co-main event, Diego de la Hoya (10-0-0, 6KO) seem to be benefiting from the very creative matchmaking of the GBP who continues to find opponents for the up and coming Mexicali native that are good enough to give the young Diego all he can take but not dangerous enough to stop his progress as a boxer.

De la Hoya beat a very game Ramiro Zurdo Robles (12-3-1, 6KO) of Guanajuato, MX via a one sided unanimous decision with the scores from the three judges all the same at 80-72.

In the first TV bout or the evening, Oscar Negrete (9-0-0.3KO) of Los Angeles beat wily veteran, Luis ?Titi? Maldonado Jr via a technical decision. Maldonado was cut by an accidental head butt at the bridge of his nose which the ring doctor determined as serious enough to stop the fight. At the time the fight was stopped in round 5, Negrete was ahead in the score cards which read 50-46, 50-45and 50-45.

In a four round lightweight fight, Jesus Delgado (5-0-1,1KO) of Los Angeles scored a very exciting 3rd round TKO over a very determined Benjamin Vinson (1-3-0, 1KO) of Nogales, AZ. A series of very bad intentioned punches in round three by Delgado which left Vinson unable to return fire forced referee David Mendoza to wave off the fight at 2:24 of the round.

In a four round super bantamweight fight Emilio Sanchez (8-0-0, 6KO) of Los Angeles stayed unbeaten via unanimous victory over Eliezer Agosto of Bayamon, PR. Sanchez scored a quick knockdown in the early part of round one and went on to dominate Agosto. Scores were 40-35,39-36 and 39-36.

In the TV swing bout, new comer but crowd favorite, Nick Arce of Los Angeles (3-0-0,1KO) scored a total of four knockdowns over Marco Alcaraz -0-6-0, 0KO) of Dallas, Texas before Valencia based referee Jack Reiss decided to stop the fight which was turning out to be a no contest. Time 2:40 0f round 2

In the curtain raiser, Diego Padilla who was making his pro debut scored a 4 round UD over Zachary Cooper of Seattle, WA ( 2-1-2, 2KO) Scores were all 40-35.
