INDONESIA PRESIDENT'S CUP: FERNANDEZ, BACHO HURDLE FOES PhilBoxing.com Fri, 24 Apr 2015 Palembang, Indonesia- The ABAP-Philippine charge in the 22nd Presidents Cup in Boxing here started on a high note in the Thursday afternoon session as bantamweight Mario Fernandez and light welterweight Joel Bacho hurdled their respective assignments in spectacular fashion. The evening session however, turned out to be disastrous as Roldan Boncales Jr., Junel Cantancio and Eumir Felix Marcial dropped their matches, missing the medal round which starts Friday. Left to carry the torch for the Philippines are women's bantamweight Nesthy Petecio, Fernandez and Bacho. Fernandez was a sight to behold as he dominated aggressive Japanese Mikito Nakamo with lightning quick combinations and excellent footwork. Bacho's opponent Sorawit Phonying of Thailand was given eight counts in all three rounds before the referee finally saw enough and halted the fight in the final canto. Boncales was winning the first round with some accurate sniping versus Ryo Mei Tanaka of Japan, when he got head butted in the face towards the end of the round. Inexplicably, the referee gave the Gensan native the 8-count. Despite the count, two judges still gave the round to Boncales but he was so hurt and dizzied by the head butt that he could not get his bearings back and consequently lost by decision. Junel Cantancio suffered an ugly gash over the right eyebrow and his fight with Mongolia's Otgondalai was stopped in the 2nd round. The Mongolian was the same boxer Charly Suarez lost to in a split decision in the gold medal match at the Incheon Asian Games last October. Eumir Felix Marcial fought a counter-punching style against still another Mongolian- wily London Olympian Tu Vshin Bat. The Zamboangueno opened a big cut on the latter's right eyebrow in round 2 which prompted the ring physician to halt the fight. The decision went to the scorecards however, and the Mongolian was adjudged the winner. Because of the cut however, Vshin will default his semifinal bout Friday. "We lost a couple of winnable fights tonight but the big picture is, we came here to give exposure and experience to our boxers in preparation for the SEA Games. I think we achieved that after running into some top boxers here", according to ABAP executive director Ed Picson. The Philippine Sports Commission and the MVP Sports Foundation bankrolled the boxers' trip here. ![]() |
