AUSTRALIA'S PROMOTER OF THE YEAR JUNKS NODA

PhilBoxing.com

Australia?s ?Promoter of the Year? Peter Maniatis says he is ?cutting off all ties? with Filipino light welterweight Jury Noda after the boxer and his trainer Charlie Sanchez ignored the pleas of Maniatis not to go ahead with a fight against undefeated Thai Saddam Kietyoungyuth in Wat Klang, Pathumthani which Noda lost by a third round TKO last April 13.

Maniatis who is listed as the manager of Noda by boxrec.com, had indicated Noda should not be allowed to fight because he risked getting badly hurt since he had previously been hurt in a third round TKO against undefeated American Craig Bellamy (2-0) in Tokyo last January 13. Maniatis expressed his concern over Noda being matched against an undefeated Thai so soon after suffering a bad beating. His concern was relayed to GAB chairman Eric Buhain but the GAB allowed the fight to go on since Maniatis was not registered as Noda?s manager in the Philippines.

Maniatis informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that he heard Noda ?took a lot of punishment in his fight in Thailand? and that he had spoken to OPBF president Frank Quill about the safety of boxers in Asia and planned to meet with Quill about it.

Maniatis said he has had ?no contact with Noda and his trainer? who has reportedly booked fights and despite ?even going to extreme measures of offering to give him the money he will receive for his purse not to fight in Thailand? the fight took place. Maniatis added ?sadly this fell on deaf years.? Maniatis said he really felt bad for Noda as he could have been a contender ?before his two mismatches overseas.? He feared that Noda ?may not come back the fighter he was due to being over-matched and could end up a journeyman and hurt.?

Maniatis said that on his next visit to the Philippines he plans to meet with GAB chairman Eric Buhain to discuss efforts at preventing mismatches and ?assisting with the safety of Filipino boxers who travel overseas.?

Maniatis said he realized that the Thai promoters pay good money compared to most Filipino promoters and it is sometimes difficult for managers and trainers to resist but stressed that ?the health of a young human being and his family is more important than any money in the world.?
