NIETES MAKES HISTORY PhilBoxing.com Mon, 23 Mar 2015 ![]() From cleaning the gym to winning international fights, ALA boxer Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes swept the world away with his passion and dedication. The janitor-turned world champion is now the longest reigning Filipino world champion, surpassing Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde?s 47-year-old record of seven years and three months. ?It?s been a phenomenal career for Donnie. It?s difficult to win a world title, what more holding it for more than seven years. Donnie has come a long way from a janitor to become a legend in Philippine boxing. It?s our pride at ALA Boxing to produce not only a great fighter but an even greater person,? said ALA Promotions President/CEO Michael?Aldeguer. Born in the municipality of Murcia on the outskirts of Bacolod, Nietes? passion for boxing was first shared by his uncle, Jerson Nietes Sr., who, like Donnie?s grandfather, father and cousin, was a boxer himself. After completing a two-year college scholarship course in industrial technology majoring in electronics, Nietes applied as a utility staff at ALA Gym owned by renowned boxing patron, Antonio Lopez Aldeguer. Every day, he?d religiously go through his chores of brushing the ring canvass, cleaning the gym, gardening, and taking care of Aldeguer?s pet animals. His daily chores also included cleaning a snake pit with five big pythons, a task which only he had the guts to do. Despite being bitten several times, he continued taking care of the snakes, which was how he got his nickname Ahas. Though Nietes won a number of invitational fights, Aldeguer had second thoughts about Nietes? request to turn pro because the latter was too thin and frail-looking, but Nietes proved his dedication and passion for the sport, and Aldeguer, being kind-hearted, gave in. At the age of 20, Nietes had his first ring appearance in San Fernando and won a six round bout against Walter Suaybaguio. But it was winning against Joseph Villasis by a 1st round TKO that won him the Philippine Boxing Federation light flyweight title. Training under Edmund Villamor, Nietes was unbeatable until September 28, 2004 when he lost a hugely controversial split decision to Indonesian fighter, Angky Angkota. But this only fueled Nietes? drive to work even harder, so it was no surprise when in September 2007, he won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) mini-flyweight belt by unanimous decision, beating then unbeatable Porsawan Porpramook. Now 34 years old, Nietes will defend his WBO light flyweight title against Gilberto ?Parrito? Parra of Mexico. Nietes and Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire will serve as the double main events in ALA Promotions and Abs-cbn Sports? Pinoy Pride 30: D-Day, which will take place at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on March 28, 2015. Nietes last fought back in November 2014, and won against Carlos Velarde in the seventh round, breaking Flash Elorde?s record, officially making Donnie the longest reigning Filipino World Champion in boxing history on January 1st of this year. ![]() |
