Kris 'THE SILENCER' George to defend his WBA Oceania title against Kiwi champ Anthony 'TNT' Taylor

PhilBoxing.com

THE BIG BOUTS KEEP COMING for Brendon Smith's 'Smithy Brings the big fights 9' card on March 14. The undefeated and reigning WBA Oceania junior welter weight champion Kris George will make his first title defence against New Zealand's Anthony 'TNT' Taylor.

Taylor is the current New Zealand Welter weight Champion. His only loss in eleven fights as a pro was a majority points decision against highly rated Australian Brandon Ogilvie. Since the loss to Ogilvie Taylor has been on a roll - winning six straight, three by knock out and three by unanimous decision. In those bouts that went the distance - on the official judges score cards the Kiwi was only adjudged to have lost three rounds out of a total of 18.

"Anthony Taylor is a good fighter, a very good fighter," Kris George's Manager Brendon Smith said.

"He's dropped just three rounds in the past three wins he had that went the distance and remember that's three rounds in total from three separate judges.

"Since the loss to Ogilvie, in his six straight wins - if he's not knocking them out he's dominating every round.

"He will come to Toowoomba in red hot form," Smith said.

Anthony Taylor also had an impressive amateur career. He represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games, won an Oceania Games silver medal and ws ranked as high as thirteen in the World amateur boxing standings.

He presents Toowoomba's fighting fisherman with his biggest challenge to date. George's picket fence is ever growing, seven fights - seven wins, 5 by knock out a Queensland title and a WBA Oceania title - which is on the line against Anthony Taylor on March 14.

"This is a tough one, but I want a tough fight to take me where I want to go," Kris George said.

"It's a 50/50 fight, I'm not the under dog and neither is he.

"It's the perfect fight for me at this point in time, we're about the same level and it's another make or break to see where I'm at.

"It's another step up and there is no stepping back.

"I know Anthony Taylor is going to be a challenge for me, but I want move further up the WBA rankings and a victory over an opponent like Taylor will only enhance my standings,"George said.

George's trainer Craig Monagle believes the challenge of Anthony Taylor will bring out the best of the fighting fisherman.

"It's a tough fight but a fight I'm confident we can win,"Monagle said.

"I think Anthony Taylor will walk forward all night, he's tough, he has a good little left hook and he carries power.

"He's a creditable challenger for the title.

"However I believe Anthony Taylor's style will suit Krissy, he knows how to fight that style of opponent, we'll work him out.

"Kris will just box along look for an opening and when he works him out we will see how strong a chin Anthony Taylor has," Monagle said.

The Kris George vs Anthony Taylor bout is the third pro fight matched for the Smithy Brings the Big Fights 9 card to be held at Rumours International on March 14.

Tickets are on sale from Smithy's Gym, $65 Anzac Avenue,Toowoomba or phone 0746 378 298
