PACMAN BOXING TEAM WINS

PhilBoxing.com

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? The Pacman Boxing Team bagged the over-all championship crown in the recently-concluded open boxing tournament of the 2nd Sarangani-Gensan Inter-Local Government Units Sports Tournament here.

Pacman Boxing Team hauled a total of four gold, two silver and three bronze medals after competing in 10 different weight categories.

World eight-division boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao hailed Renato Moreno, Pacman Boxing Team manager, and the members of the team for claiming the championship spot.

?I?m glad that you?re trying your best to excel. Keep it up. I?m here to support you all the way. I, myself, went through that stage. Just keep you focus and determination,? Pacquiao told the members of his boxing team.

One hundred boxers representing 10 different teams from all over Mindanao took part in a four-day slugfest staged at the Robinsons Place here.

The Cagayan De Oro City Boxing delegation snatched the second place with a score of two gold, two silver and one bronze medals.

Boxing team from Cotabato Province came in third with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

?Nobody went home empty-handed. All the losers got consolation prizes,? Sannie Sombrio, organizer of the boxing event, said.

The over-all champion got the P10,000 cash prize; the 1st runner-up pocketed P8,000; and 2nd runner-up received P5,000.

The remaining seven teams got of P2,000 each as consolation prize.

Individual prizes included P1,500 each for the gold winners; P1,000 each for silver and P750 each for bronze medalists.

?All the participants who lost in their boxing matches were given P300 each. So, even the losers went home with a smile,? Sombrio further said.

The boxing tourney was just part of the 11-game sports tournament staged by the Manny Pacquiao Sports Challenge, an annual sports event in Sarangani and General Santos bankrolled by Pacquiao.

Pacquiao launched the project last year not only to promote health and fitness but also to enhance sportsmanship, camaraderie and unity among local government units in Sarangani and General Santos.

This year?s tournament, with a total budget of P8 million, kicked off last Tuesday at the Pacman Sports Stadium in Tambler village here.

Employees from local government units from Sarangani and Gensan were organized into teams and were pitted against each other in the field of basketball, beach volleyball, volleyball, boxing, shooting, badminton, lawn tennis, dart, chess and scrabble.

Organizers, however, put up open categories particularly in boxing, basketball, volleyball and shooting.

All sports events would be holding championship matches on Monday, the same day the 2nd Manny Pacquiao International Open 10-Ball Billiards Tournament sanctioned by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) would kick off.

The billiards tourney, with a total guaranteed prize of USD150,000, will be held at SM City-Gensan atrium from Dec. 8 to 17.

The sports events were staged as a prelude to a grand 36th birthday celebration of the boxer-lawmaker in the evening of Dec. 17 here. /By Aquiles Z. Zonio
