MARK DURAN SUFFERS 5TH ROUND KO IN WBC BANTAMWEIGHT SILVER TITLE FIGHT
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 24 Nov 2014
Filipino Lionel Mark Duran has suffered a 5th round knockout at the hands of Mexico?s WBC bantamweight Silver champion Julio ?Pollito? Ceja on the undercard of ?Hate in the Ring? fight card in Toluca, Mexico on Sunday.
By all accounts the fight was a mismatch because in the last ratings of the Games and Amusements Board, the 23 year old Duran was not ranked among the top 15 Filipino bantamweights and had a record of 13-10-2 with 5 knockouts when he stepped into the ring while the 22 year old defending champion Ceja had a record of 27-1 with 25 knockouts.
In his last title defense Ceja also won handily against over-matched Filipino Ranel Suco (15-7-2, 6 KO?s)by a 10th round TKO last April 26 also in Mexico.
The WBC reported that Ceja made a great return to the ring when he halted Duran at 2:21 in the fifth round ?with a flurry of sinking punches digging deep into the mid-section and ribs, followed by some walloping rights to the head? that dropped Duran.?
The WBC said the referee Gelasio Perez Huerta immediately stopped the fight.
While Ceja is not ?crowing over the win? the WBC believes it was ?an important swwoping and sweeping victyory for ?Pollito? and ?kept the fight plan nicely on course for a showdown with WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka.?
