NIETES PAYS COURTESY CALL ON LAURA ELORDE, VISITS ?FLASH?ELORDE?S TOMB

PhilBoxing.com

World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes paid a courtesy call on Ms. Laure Elorde, widow of the late, great world junior lightweight champion Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde at her home on Sucat Road, Paranaque on Thursday.

Nietes and IBF Intercontinental super bantamweight champion Prince Albert Pagara and light flyweight title contender Milan Melindo who all won their bouts on ?Pinoy Pride XXVIII? at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino last Saturday, each carried a bouquet of flowers and handed them over to the matriarch of the respected Elorde clan before they sat down for afternoon snacks marked by an insightful exchange between Ms. Elorde and Nietes.

The fighters were accompanied by ALA Promotions vice president Dennis Canete.

Laura Elorde was in high spirits and as Nietes handed her the flowers she asked, ?where is your snake? Why didn?t you bring it along?? setting the tone and making the fighters comfortable as a few minutes later the group reflected on the life and times of Elorde spiced by amusing exchanges between Laura Elorde and this reporter whom she told the boxers was ?family and like my son? to which we jokingly replied ?for me to be your son, you would have had to marry when you were eight years old? which resulted in laughter all around.

Ms. Elorde who issued a touching statement after Nietes won and stood on the threshold of surpassing her husband?s longtime record of reigning as world junior lightweight champion for seven years and 3 months in which she extolled the comparable virtues of Nietes and her late husband saying that surpassing Elorde?s record which will happen on January 1, 2015 is ?a tribute to his skill, dedication and hard work.?
She reiterated the fact that the Elorde family is proud of Elorde?s achievement ?but prouder still that Nietes? whom she described as a good and decent Filipino champion has risen to take his place among the heroes of our time.?

Ms. Elorde asked Nietes to remain humble as always and for Pagara and Melindo to learn from his fine example.
Nietes, Pagara, Melindo and Canete expressed their profuse gratitude to Ms. Elorde for her graciousness after which they left for the Manila Memorial Park where they paid their respects at the tomb of ?Flash? Elorde, spent some time in meditation and knelt down in prayer in an emotional and inspiring tribute to one of the greatest champions of all-time.
