CLAVERAS, DIALE RETAIN TITLES IN MAKATI SQUARE ARENA

PhilBoxing.com

WBC Asia Boxing Council light flyweight champion Richard Claveras retained his title with an 8th round TKO over JC Francisco while Philippine flyweight champion Adrin Diale wasn?t impressive even though he kept his belt when the one-sided bout was stopped at the end of the 8th round by referee Virgilio Garcia.

Francisco who had a mediocre record of 6-8-3 with 2 knockouts and appeared to be an easy opponent for Claveras who was unbeaten in 9 fights with 2 draws and all nine wins coming by way of knockouts ,put on a surprisingly competitive challenge as predicted by matchmaker Art Monis.

In keeping with WBC rules the judges scorecards were announced at the end of four rounds with two judges having Claveras ahead by a 40-36 shutout while the third judge had it even at 37-37.
Try as hard as he could Claveras who caught Francisco with solid left jabs and rapid-fire combinations highlighted by shots to the body failed to drop Francisco who hung on until internationally respected referee Ferdinand Estrella stopped the contest at 1:00 minute of the eighth round as the challenger appeared to visibly tire and had nothing left in him.

With the win Claveras improved to 10-0-2 with 10 knockouts while Francisco dropped to 6-9-3 with 2 knockouts.

Veteran Ardin Diale coasted to a comfortable victory over Jenie Boy Buca who was ranked No. 6 by the Games and Amusements Board in a fight where the 20 year old boxer was clearly out of his depth in his first big test since coming off a 7th round TKO win over Raymond Dayham last June 28.

Diale who won by a 4th round TKO over another youngster Renerio Arizala in a fiercely competitive fight in Taal, Batangas last October 4 looked far from impressive against Buca despite the TKO win at the end of round 10.

In what might be considered a stunning upset, Jhonny Gemino won by a TKO at 2:19 of the 7th round when referee Nowell Haduca stopped the contest as a delighted Gemino captured the Philippine Boxing Federation super bantamweight championship beating fancied Rey Juntilla of the United Boxing Gym in a fight card promoted by Edgar De Castro of the United Boxing Gym in Manila and Ryuta Kato of the United Boxing Gym in Japan before an enthusiastic crowd at the hot and humid Makati Square Arena.
British Coach Warren Evison told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that the two young promoters are striving to help Filipino boxers in their quest for regional titles at first before aiming for possible world title shots.

Gemino moved well and out-boxed Juntilla who appeared to be looking for one big knockout punch which never came as Gemino moved well to stay out of trouble en route to an impressive win.

The fights will be telecast in succeeding weeks over Viva Sports top rated weekly boxing show "The Main Event" on Pinoy Boy Office (PBO) over Sky Cable on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. with replays on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.
