PHILBOXING'S RICH MAZON WINS TOFA-NY AWARD By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Wed, 08 Oct 2014 Rich Mazon. Writer Rich Mazon won The Outstanding Filipino-Americans in New York (TOFA-NY) award in the Media and Publishing category representing Philboxing.com in the recently concluded voting of the organization's 4th annual awards done through the social media. The awards give honors to outstanding Filipino-American individuals and organizations residing in the New York metropolitan area. Mazon, whose day job is a Registered Nurse and resides in New Jersey, was introduced into boxing by his father as a kid and became a big boxing fan who grew up watching the fights of Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran. His father also introduced him to boxing heavyweights Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Gerry Cooney, among others. Observing the struggles of Filipino boxers and their search for glory in the sport, Mazon decided to write to chronicle the saga of their lives. ?I started to write and continue to write about the sport to tell the stories of our Pinoy boxers who struggle through the pain of training, the politics of the sport, the greed of some -- to give themselves, their family and their country honor, glory and pride just like most of our countrymen who venture out of the country to make a living for themselves in a foreign land, except our boxers are armed with only a pair of fists and a fighting heart. To me, their stories of triumph, defeat, victory and strife are worth telling and chronicling,? Mazon said. The awarding will be held at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in midtown Manhattan on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014 which is also the culmination the month-long celebration of the Filipino American History Month in New York. The complete list of winners are: Arts & Culture, Kinding Sindaw; Business & Entrepreneurship, Dennis Josue; Community Service & Advocacy, Roger Santos; Courage of Conviction, Geena Rocero; Education, Research & Technology, Michael Vea; Entertainment, Jhett Tolentino; Fashion & Style, Elle Madrona; Food & Restaurants, Joel Javier; Health Care, Nemcy Duran; LGBT Advocacy, Jenab-i Pareja; Media & Publishing, Ritz Mazon Craves; Public Service & Politics, Ludi de Asis Hughes; Senior Welfare Advocacy, Juliet Payabyab; Youth & Sports, Team Takbo. ?I congratulate The Outstanding Filipino Americans in New York (TOFA-NY) 2014 at a most fitting time this October when we celebrate Filipino American History month,? said Consul General Mario de Leon Jr. in a message to TOFA-NY. ?The awardees and nominees? are a testament to the excellence of the Filipinos in every field imaginable, and their significant contribution to the progress of both the U.S. and the Philippines.?
