Filipino IM Bagamasbad prevails By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Fri, 22 Nov 2024 Porto Santo Island, Portugal---Filipino International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad played even better in his fifth game in the 32nd World Senior Chess Championship, turning back Candidate Master Carlos Araya Umana of Costa Rica on Thursday. Not everything was good news for Filipino fans, though, with International Master Chito Danilo Garma failing to sustain the momentum of his Wednesday victory over the Lithuanian Grandmaster Maxim Novik, bowing to the Russian Grandmaster Yuri Piskov. FIDE Master Mario Mangubat, on the other hand, halved the point with Tom Braathen of Sweden. With these mixed results, Bagamasbad tallied 2.0 points in five outings, the same output of Mangubat while Garma remained at 3.0 points. In the 65 over category, Bagamasbad is set to do battle against Undriadi Benggawan of Canada while Mangubat will be up against Sippo Puroila of Finland. In the 50 years old and above, Garma will meet FIDE Master Stephan Giemsa of Germany. "I'm so happy with my performance tonight," said the 68-year-old Bagamasbad, a native of Camarines Norte who is eyeing the third and final grandmaster norm. "Hoping to bounce back into World Senior contention," said the 60 year old Sampaloc, Manila resident Garma who is also gunning for his third and final grandmaster norm.
