WBO TO PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS, CLOTHES AND TRAINING EQUIPMENT TO FIVE YOUNG PROSPECTS IN THE PHILIPPINES By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Jun 2014 Valcarcel. The World Boxing Organization headed by its president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel is launching a commendable program in the Philippines and Mexico to provide financial assistance for scholarships, clothes and boxing equipment to five young promising fighters chosen by a panel of journalists in each of the two countries. An announcement in San Juan, Puerto Rico said as was done in early 2014 in Puerto Rico the WBO ?will stimulate several prospects of professional boxing from Mexico and the Philippines as part of the successful program Kids Drug Free.? Valcarcel said the young boxers will be financially rewarded with scholarships to further their studies while continuing their boxing careers. The WBO president noted that they had this event in Puerto Rico, the home of the WBO and ?want to go to other regions to encourage sports and studies in the young boxers, so lets do it in two major boxing countries like Mexico and the Philippines.? He added, ?the important thing is that it will motivate these young boxers on their education and also their career in boxing.? In Puerto Rico, the WBO awarded undefeated Felix ?Diamante? Verdejo, Emmanuel ?Manny? Rodriguez and John Carl Sosa and hopes to select five young fighters with ten bouts or less. The 21 year old Verdejo who was signed up by Top Rank Promotions is a sensational lightweight who is undefeated with a record of 13-0 with 10 knockouts. ?Manny? Rodriguez is a 21 year old unbeaten super flyweight with a record of 9-0 with 5 knockouts while Sosa is also 21 and is an undefeated light welterweight with a record of 10-0 with 8 knockouts. Valcarcel announced that the young fighters will be chosen by a group of journalists in the Philippines and Mexico respectively who will vote for five young boxers and the five who receive the most number of votes will be the so-called WBO Prospects. WBO vice president for the Asia Pacific region Leon Panoncillo Jr will handle the process of selection in the Philippines while Rafael Santos Lopez will be responsible for Mexico. The chosen young prospects will also receive plaques to commemorate their selection with the award activities to be held soon.
