SONNY BOY JARO CHOPS DOWN INDON ICHAL TOBIDA IN 6 ROUNDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Jun 2014 By Sonshine Sports Davao City - Former World Boxing Council (WBC) Flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro lived up to his billing as one of the most vicious body punchers in the lighter weight divisions pummeling Indonesian Ichal Tobida with heavy body shots before finally scoring a knockout in the 6th round to win the vacant Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) bantamweight title in the jampacked Davao City Recreation Center here. Jaro, 32, who is yearning for another chance at the world title, preferably in the Superflyweight Division, was methodical in his attack going to Tobida's midsection with thundering body punches starting Round 1. He weathered a furious attack launched by the Indonesian in the 3rd and 4th rounds and came back in the sixth to connect with head punches before going back down chopping down Tobida like a log. Referee Bruce Mactavish stopped the fight as the Indonesian fighter, who is his country's Superflyweight champion and who recently caused the death of Indonesia's superflyweight champion following an intense fight, knelt on the canvas with his head bowed. The victory over Tobida brings Jaro closer to another crack at the world title which he said could be in the Superflyweight division has he has grown bigger to stay in the flyweight division. Appearing in the main event of The Boxing Revolution I, a boxing series staged by Sonshine Sports Management which is a brainchild of spiritual leader Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy, Jaro packed the fully-airconditioned Davao Recreation Center, formerly known as the Almendras Gymnasium, with about 3,000 people from Davao City and the neighboring areas. Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte stayed until the end of the last fight of the boxing card described by many boxing enthusiasts as world class in its presentation. "I hope that with the support of Pastor Quiboloy, I will again get a chance to fight for the world title," Jaro said during an interview after the fight. He said he feels he still has a good 3 to 4 more years in professional boxing and is eyeing a possible matchup with WBC Superflyweight Champion Marco Antonio Rubio. In the main undercards of The Boxing Revolution I, Philippine Junior Welterweight Champion and former national amateur standout Adonis Cabalquinto knocked out challenger Giovanni Rota with a powerful left to the jaw in the sixth round. In a non-title fight, former world title challenger Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva sent Indonesian Henrick Barongsay crashing through the ropes and out of the ring with a devastating left straight only in the first round. Referee Mactavish counted out the Indonesian after he failed to return get up as his hand was entangled with the rope straps. After he was counted out, Barongsay complained that he could have continued with the fight. "The rule is simple, if you fall off the ring during an exchange of punches, you are given 20 seconds to get back into the ring unassisted but if you lay on the canvas following a punch, even on the apron of the ring, you will be allowed only 10 seconds to get up," Mactavish later explained. Other results of the fight: - Roskie Cristobal ended his string of knockout victories and managed to eke out a majority decision victory over Gaby Siemple in six rounds; - Rolando Magbanua showed his class as he neatly outpointed Jay-R Mendoza after 8 rounds of a featherweight fight; - Rommel Asenjo needed only punch to the midsection to knock out Michael Borja in a junior flyweight encounter; - Gilbert Gomera, who came into the ring with a 4 win-4 KO record, won by majority technical decision over veteran Philip Parcon after a clash of heads in the 4th round.
