DLSU ARCHERS OULAST UST TIGERS FOR UAAP TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

It was one of the most exciting series in UAAP history, as the De La Salle Green Archers nailed a come-from-behind overtime victory over the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 71-69, in the finals of the UAAP Season 76 Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Diminutive guard Almond Vosotros sank the go-ahead basket 19 seconds to go in the overtime period to push La Salle ahead and handed the Green Archers the crown they last won in 2007. The Green Archers were piloted by Juno Sauler who won the title in his first year as UAAP coach.

The UST Growling Tigers finished second again for the second consecutive year, as they lost to the Ateneo Blue Eagles in last year's finals.

In a heart-pounding finish, Kevin Ferrer and Jeric Teng scored successively to put the Tigers ahead 69-67 with 34 seconds left in overtime.

Jeron Teng then split his charity throws to close La Salle to within one point, 69-68. But Aljon Mariano committed a wasteful turnover, with Jeron Teng setting up Vosotros for the winning shot for La Salle, 70-69.

UST missed their chance for a turnaround basket and UST had to foul in order to survive. LA Revilla made one of two free-throws to seal the Archers' win for the final score of 71-69.

Karim Abdul missed a basket and another three-pointer as potential game-winning shots within the last 9 seconds of the game and La Salle grabbed the title once again after six years.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore Jeron Teng was selected as the Most Valuable Player with his 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists and was instrumental in the Archers' big comeback from 15 points down in the second half where he scored 19.

He scored 15 points in La Salle?s 72-73 game one loss, then bounced back with 19 points in their game two win, 77-70. He was always compared to his brother Jeric, who scored 24, was in the opposing team and it made the series even more thrilling and more interesting.

?When the buzzer sounded, I really didn?t know how to feel. On the other side, I?m happy because we?re champions. On the other side, was my brother and I feel his loss, ? Jeron was quoted by inter-AKTV. Both were sons of PBA legend Alvin Teng.
