Woes continue to hound Pinoy boxers By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Fri, 07 Jun 2013 Out of four Filipino boxers that fought last weekend in various locations worldwide, only one came through with a victory, adding to the recent string of defeats that has hounded Philippine boxing. Super Flyweight Bruno Escalante (8-1-1,4 KOs) was the lone victor last Saturday, when he knocked out Christian Salgado of Mexico in the 2nd round of their scheduled 8 round match at the Fox Theater in Redwood City, California. The Cebu City born boxer scored an easy victory last Saturday, sending his foe twice in the canvas en route to the 4th knockout of his career. Escalante trains at the Undisputed Boxing Gym in the Bay Area, which is the same gym that Nonito Donaire Jr. utilizes for his training camps. The 24 year old Escalante trains under watchful eyes of Brian Schwartz and Michael Bazzel. Meantime, Gabriel Altarejos (12-2-1, 4 KOs) of Paranaque City suffered a first round knockout in the hands of former world champ, Hugo Fidel Cazares (39-7-2, 29 KOS) in a bout held in Ecatepec, M?xico, Mexico, also last Saturday. The 21 year old Altarejos succumbed to a body shot thrown at him by Cazares in only the first round of their twelve round bout which was for Cazares?s WBC International Silver Super bantam belt. In Japan, Ryan Ray Ponteras (12-10-1, 6 KOS) was denied his hard earned victory when a weird ?defeat by foul? call was slapped on him by the Japan Boxing Commission, when he fought Japanese, Go Onaga in Okinawa, Japan last Sunday. Ponteras was mauling Onaga in in the 4th round of their scheduled 8 rounder when the referee stepped in and halted the action. Onaga was granted time to recover in a stool on what was ruled as a foul by the referee and boxing officials, owing to some punches of Ponteras that landed on the back of Onaga?s head during that heated period in the 4th. When Onaga refused to continue, the fight was awarded to the hometown fighter via the above mentioned ruling and a defeat for the Filipino fighter. (http://philboxing.com/news/story-83930.html) Ponteras was not the lone loser and aggrieved party that Sunday night in Okinawa, Japan as countryman Jose Ocampo (17-6-1, 12 KOs) suffered a debatable 5th round TKO lost against Okinawan, Koseki Nakama. According to boxing manager, Aljoe Jaro who was with Ponteras and Ocampo during their trip in Japan, Ocampo and Nakama clashed heads in the 5th, producing a big cut on Filipino?s eyebrow. But when the referee stopped the action as a result of the head butts, a foul was committed on Ocampo during that break. Jaro narrated. (When the referee stopped it because of the heavy bleeding on Ocampo, Ocampo lowered his hands because the referee said ?head butt?, after he lowered his hand, Nakama punched him and Ocampo was knocked down by it.) ?Binilangan siya ng referee, pag tayo ni Ocampo, bigla pinatingin sa doctor at tinigil agad, kaya talo ng TKO,? Jaro added. (The referee gave him the count and when Ocampo got up, he was sent to be seen by the doctor at ringside and the fight was stopped, that is why he lost via TKO.) Ocampo had to be mended with multiple stitches after his fight with Kanama according to Jaro. Jaro and fellow boxing manager Manny Pinol complained to the Japanese boxing officials after the fight but to no avail. The defeats of Altarejos, Ponteras and Ocampo added to the current state of disappointments that has befallen Filipino pugilists and fans alike in recent months, starting to the dethroning of former champions and stars like Manny Pacquiao, Brian Viloria and Nonito Donaire Jr. You can reach the author at rrmaze24@aol.com and on Twitter at Freemazon910.
