Golden Boy intent on making Matthysse vs. Garcia for September in DC By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Mon, 20 May 2013 Lucas Matthysse. Atlantic City ? Danny Garcia was at ringside last Saturday night when Lucas Matthysse demolished IBF 140 pound champ Lamont Peterson at the Boardwalk Hall Arena. The Showtime network cameras zoomed on him and his entourage after the bout ended in just three rounds. He smiled during that juncture and flashed the ?I?m the number 1? sign as a companion did the same. Garcia can argue that he is the top dog of the talented junior welterweight class. He is the WBC and the WBA champion. He is also undefeated in all of his 26 fights. Matthysse on the other hand is a mere interim champ (WBC) and has lost twice already, although debatable decisions on both occasions. But the Argentinean juggernaut?s performance against Peterson and of late has been catching the eyes of the boxing world. His stock is on the rise and rising fast and a collision with Garcia is on the way. The fight between the two according to Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotions? CEO, is ?very likely? to happen. ?We?ve discussed that fight before. We?ve discussed it with his manager, with Al Haymon who is representing Lucas as well. That?s the fight we are going to do,? Schaefer told the press last Saturday. Schaefer even has a date and a venue in mind for the fight that will pit the two hardest punchers in their division. He points to September 17th as his target date and The Verizon Center in Washington DC as the possible venue. ?That?s the fight (that) we want to do. That?s the fight (that) fight fans want to see. Danny Garcia is the kind of fighter who has never turned down anybody. He is a great fighter. He always steps up and he always delivers and he delivers big,? Schaefer said of the fight and of Garcia. Matthysse admits that Garcia has been on his radar, and after his statement victory last night, his name will be on the Philadelphia fighter?s head as well. ?Yes it is the fight that I?ve been looking for. We?ve talked about it. I was told that if I got past this there is a likelihood that I will be fighting Danny Garcia and that is what I want,? said Matthysse after the fight. Schaefer believes that there will be no difficulty in making the fight despite the two sharing the powerful Al Haymon as their adviser. He stated that in the contrary, the fight will be easier to make. A statement that Bernard Hopkins, Golden Boy?s East Coast managing partner, agrees to. ?Absolutely no problem, Al Haymon is a fan of the sport as well. He wants to see the best fight the best,? declared Schaefer. If everything goes as Schaefer says, fight fans will be treated to one of the best display of action in the ring from two of the best sluggers of the sport at the nation?s capital. ?I am going to work very hard to get this done. That is the kind of events we want to put together,? He added. You can reach the author at rrmaze24@aol.com or on Twitter @Freemazon910.
