NBA -- Knicks take a commanding 2-0 lead

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks beat the Boston Celtics, 87-71, Tuesday night to take a a 2-0 lead in their best-of-7 opening round series at the Madison Square Garden.
All-Star forward Paul Pierce's led the Celtics with 18 points and Kevin Garnett chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Both of them were hampered by foul trouble throughout the game.
Knicks ace Carmelo Anthony scored 34 points tonight to lead all scorers. He has totaled 70 points over the first two games of this series. His timely buckets led the Knicks back from a 48-42 deficit at the end of the first half.
JR Smith was presented with the NBA 2013 Sixth Man of the Year Award during pre-game introductions for the top reserve in the league. Smith came off the bench to score 19 points including a buzzer beating 33 footer at the end of the first quarter.
Kenyon Martin played inspired defense off the bench and contributed 11 rebounds and emphatically rejected four shots into the stands.
The Knicks held the Celtics to 23 points in the second half of tonight's game. In game 1, the Knicks held the Celtics to only 25 second half points, including only eight points in the fourth quarter. The commitment to defense has been a welcome addition to the Knicks gameplan.
Game 3 will take place on Friday night at the TD Garden in Boston. (RS)
