LOS ANGELES -- All-Star Chris Paul banked a running shot with 0.1 seconds left in a thrilling playoffs encounter and the Los Angeles Clippers pulled off a narrow 93-91 escape against the Memphis Grizzlies Monday night at the Staples Center.
Paul's heroics gave the No.4 seeded Clippers a 2-0 lead in their best-of-7 showdown with the No.5 ranked Grizzlies. Game 3 shifts to the FedEx Forum in Memphis on Thursday night.
Falling behind by 11 with 9:35 left in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies showed a lot spunk and charged all the way back to tie the knot at 91-91 following a slam dunk by Marc Gasol. But with still 13.9 seconds to go, the Clips had ample time to draw the winning play with Paul as the go-to-guy.
Paul led Los Angeles with 24 points and nine assists while fellow All-Star Blake Griffin checked in with 21 points and eight rebounds. Jamal Crawford had 15 off the bench for the Clips, who made just 2-of-15 from 3-point range but finished with 33 of 73 field goals overall.
"If you're competitive, that what you love, and Paul, loves that part," Clippers head coach Vinny Del Negro told NBA.com of the best player's competitive fire. Del negro also stressed that the series is far from over, "All we did was protect our home court. We did what we're supposed to do."
Point guard Mike Conley paced the Grizzlies with 28 and nine assists while the tandem of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph combined for 30 points and 15 rebounds. (MR)
