The 'Cobra' Difuses the 'Bomba' in Cavite Slugfest By Tam Almeda PhilBoxing.com Tue, 19 Dec 2006 David “Cobra” Plana won the LUZPROBA Phils. Jr. Lightweight Championship by stopping Julius “Bomba” Tarona at 2’ 30” 7th round last night, 18 December 2006, at the Trece Martires, Cavite Municipal Gym. The “Cavite Knockout Carnival 2006” was another successful event by Trece Martires Mayor Melencio “Jun” de Sagun and his son, Melvin, to promote the sport of boxing and encourage the youth to take up the sport. Plana amused and elicited cheers from the crowd with his “unorthodox” style of fighting. Tarona went down in the 2nd round when he received solid hits from Plana. Plana dominated all rounds although Tarona scored jabs in the first minute of every round. Hard left and right punches by the new champ eventually wore Tarona down. Plana was deducted a point in the 6th round when an accidental clash of heads cut Tarona’s left eyebrow. Nevertheless, Plana still overpowered Tarona with strong wallops and roundhouse punches that kept the crowd alive in every round. Plana dropped Tarona with a hard right body shot in the 7th round to end the most exciting fight of the evening to live up to its billing as the “super main event”. The two 6-rounder supporting events featured the Minimum Flyweight division fight between Leo Ladip and Ruel Lagunero and the Light Flyweight division fight between Mark Vito and Richard Del Valle. Ladip and Lagunero gave what I would say a “your-money’s-worth” fight as they also delighted the crowd with their “non-stop” exchange of punches. The fight kept the crowd cheering and on their feet. Lagunero threw more punches in the 1st round. The two continued their fast paced exchanges in the 2nd round where Lagunero almost floored Ladip with a solid right to the chin. Had Ladip not held the rope, Lagunero would’ve scored a knockdown. Ladip was clearly hurt. This fight never had a dull moment. Although lacking in jabs, Lagunero still dominated the fight with strong straight punches. Ladip had nothing to be ashamed of. He had good conditioning and fought with strength and style that’s why he managed to endure Lagunero’s hard punches and at times hurt Lagunero with counters of his own. In the 4th round, Ladip suffered a cut on his right eyebrow from a punch but the ring physician allowed the fight to continue. Lagunero won by a split decision. One judge scored the fight 58 – 57 for Ladip while the other two scored 60 – 54 and 58 – 56 for Lagunero. Mark Vito narrowly escaped defeat by scoring a split decision victory over opponent Richard Del Valle. Two judges both scored 57 – 56 for Vito while the other scored 58 – 55 for Del Valle. The fight was more of a slugfest as Vito was forced to adapt to Del Valle’s style. Vito was deducted a point in the 2nd round for an accidental head butt. Other result: In the 4-round super bantamweight fight, Norbin Morada won by a unanimous decision over opponent Anthony Esmidina. The judges scores are 39 – 38, 40 – 36 and 39 – 37. Romnick Dejano got hurt a couple of times in the 4th round and was floored by Julius Espa?ola in the 1st round but still won by a majority draw in their 130 lb 4-rounder fight. The scores were 38 – 37 twice for Dejano while the third judge saw it at 38 – 38. A head-scratching split decision win was awarded to Ruel Cuizon over Jonnel Hernan in their 128 lb fight where Cuizon dominated. Two judges scored the fight 39 – 37 for Hernan but, surprisingly to this writer, the third judge scored it 40 – 36 for Cuizon. Cuizon bloodied Hernan’s nose in the 3rd round. The 4-round Junior Flyweight curtain raiser of the evening was cut short when Daniel Arsala suffered a cut on his right eyebrow after he clashed heads with Allen Matugas. The technical draw was called barely 51’’ in the 1st round. Comments on this write-up are welcome at tekpi_tam@hotmail.com Click here to view a list of other articles written by Tam Almeda. |
