Ana Julaton preps for a performance outside the ring By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 31 Mar 2013 While waiting for her next fight to materialize, the Philippines? first women?s champion in boxing is busy preparing herself in another aspect of the sport, as a member of the press. Ana ?The Hurricane? Julaton will be involved in tonight?s big boxing event in Las Vegas, not as a combatant inside the ring but as a part of the media at ringside for the rematch between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado. Julaton will be working with legendary boxing commentator and sports commentator, Al Bernstein for The Boxing Channel, a TV-formatted website. ?I?ll be doing Media now for the Boxing Channel for Rios vs. Alvarado in Vegas. Al Bernstein is mentoring me for broadcast,? Julaton excitedly informed Philboxing.com. The former WBO Female Super Bantamweight champ last fight was seven months ago and her career has been placed on hold after promoter Allan Tremblay fell ill to cancer. ?I am ready to fight at any time Rich, but the bigger fight is for my promoter, Allan Tremblay, who is going back for more chemo therapy in April. As you know, he has been battling cancer since 2011,? Julaton told this writer. ?He is like a father to me and he is one of the best people to ever be involved in the sport,? said Julaton who has been very supportive of his promoter during his treatments. But Julaton informed Philboxing.com that she and her team are working hard to stage her next fight. They have been involved with talks with different promoters for her anticipated return to the ring this year. ?I want the best fights out there. In fact, I spoke to Sampson Lewkowicz yesterday and asked, "Why Chantall Martinez is so reluctant to fight me?" Sampson knows I have no problem in going to Panama. I also spoke to Paco Valcarcel, the WBO President, at the weigh-ins and asked what is it going to take to bring Yesica Marcos out of Mendoza, Argentina and bring that rematch to the Philippines ASAP this year. Plans are in motion for me in regards to that.? Julaton has also expressed interest with working with Bob Arum?s Top Rank for a possible inclusion in one of its events. The former champ has been longing to fight in one of Manny Pacquiao?s fights, her countryman and friend, and Arum informed her that there might be a spot for her when Pacquiao returns to fight in September. ?Bob Arum told me today that there may be an opportunity in Macau in September and everyone knows I want Jackie Nava as soon as she's ready this year. So maybe, Pac-JMM 5 and Julaton vs. Nava Part 1?? But for the meantime, Julaton will be doing some work outside of the ring as they wait for her next date inside the ring. Her mentor, Al Bernstein has high praises for her as a budding broadcaster. ?She is working hard and doing well. She did a nice job on the Rios-Alvarado stuff on The Boxing Channel,? Bernstein told Philboxing.com. ?I hope to do it at the same time if I can, boxing and broadcasting. I've seen Andre Ward do it for HBO and Paulie Malignaggi for Showtime. I would love to get the opportunity to do what they are doing when the time is right. I am fortunate to have a Hall of Famer in Al Bernstein, teach me about this side of the sport. He is a great mentor,? expressed Julaton. Tonight, it will be microphones and cameras instead of gloves and punching bags for Ana Julaton, but hopefully not for too long.
