PLDT-ABAP NATIONAL AMATEUR BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS GOES UNDERWAY IN MAASIN CITY ON FEBRUARY 18-22, 2013 By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sat, 16 Feb 2013 MAASIN CITY - Boxers, coaches and officials have started arriving in this capital city of Southern Leyte for the 2013 PLDT-ABAP National Amateur Boxing Championships. Hotels are booked for the participants and the fighting venue at the Maasin City Gym is ready. The participating teams who confirmed their participation are Sorsogon, Tayabas, Olongapo, Zambales, La Union and Iba (Zambales) from Luzon; Mandaue, Cebu City, Bago City, Northern Samar, Tagbilaran, Leyte and host Maasin City from Visayas; and Davao del Norte, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos City, Manolo Fortich, Davao City, Cabadbaran City, Camiguin, Sarangani, Pacman (Sarangani), and Balingasag from Mindanao. The participants are the winners of the different regional eliminations held at Iba, Zambales for Luzon, Bago City for Visayas, and General Santos City for Mindanao. The categories to be contested are the following: Junior boys (15-16 years old)- pinweight, light flyweight, light bantamweight, and bantamweight divisions; Junior girls (15-16 years old) - pinweight, light flyweight, flyweight, light bantamweight, bantamweight, featherweight, and lightweight divisions; Youth boys (17 -18 years old) - pinweight, light flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, and light flyweight divisions; Youth girls (17-18 years old) - light flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, featherweight, and lightweight divisions; and Elite boys (19-22 years old) - light flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight, and light welterweight divisions. The tournament is a knockout system and International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) rules will be used. For team standings preliminary round or quarterfinal winners receive a mark each, semifinal winners 2 marks each, and final winners 3 marks each. If two or more teams have equal number of marks there are tie breakers used. The number of victories in the finals or number of gold medals; and if this is equal the number of second place or number of silver medals; and if this is equal the number of third places or number of bronze medals. ABAP national elections will also be held at the Cafe Romana on February 21. Expected to arrive for the elections and the final bouts are ABAP Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, ABAP President Ricky Vargas, and other officials. Executive Director Ed Picson will arrive earlier on Sunday together with the officiating officials.
