ALA GYM-CITY OF MAASIN BOXING PARTNERSHIP By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Fri, 01 Feb 2013 The development of boxing in Maasin City has earned another boost when the renowned ALA Boxing Gym offered to train boxers from Maasin in their plush boxing facilities. The boxers presently training at ALA Gym are Jason Becong, Rico Evale, Regged Angco and Ruzkin Canon. They will represent the city during its hosting of the PLDT-ABAP National Boxing Championships on February 17-22 at the Maasin City Gym. Three of the boxers fought at the ALA-Summit Drinking Water Fight Night Amateur Boxing Series last January 27 at the Gaisano Country Mall Carpark. Canon won over Nilo Butayta of Phil-Australian Boxing Club, while Evale was beaten by Jun Nunez of Flores Boxing Club, and Becong was defeated by Mark Rotilles of Phil-Australian Boxing Club. Maasin City is now included in the ALA-Summit Drinking Water Amateur Boxing Series with the initial boxing card scheduled on February 12 at the City Gymnasium or Integrated Bus and Jeepney Terminal. ALA Promotions has confidence on the sports development program of the city that is why they recommend Maasin to be included in the highly prestigious amateur boxing series. Other Summit Boxing Series are also held at Robinson?s Place, Dumaguete City and at the Tagbilaran City Square, Tagbilaran City. Founded in 1986 by businessman, philanthropist and considered as the ?Godfather of Philippine Boxing? Mr. Antonio Lopez Aldeguer, according to its website alaboxing.com, the ALA Boxing Gym started out as a small time gym training kids from below average families to become amateur fighters. Years passed and ALA Boxing has evolved into the Philippines? biggest boxing stable producing the country?s best amateur and professional champions in the ring. There are now more than fifty fighters housed at the ALA Gym and it trains more than a hundred local and foreign amateur and professional fighters. Aldeguer was in Maasin when the city hosted the Visayas Inter-Cities Developmental Amateur Boxing Tournament in 2001. Two boxers from Maasin City are prot?g?s of ALA Gym, WBO international junior welterweight champion Jason Pagara and OPBF No. 8 superflyweight contender Albert Pagara. Series of Maasin Pride boxing cards were held in Maasin City featuring Prince Albert and supported by ALA?s Best of the Best Boxing Promotions. The latest was Maasin Pride IV with Pagara winning Tawanrung Eausampan of Thailand by second round TKO before an overflow crowd at the Maasin City Gym last November. Amateur boxing bouts were also featured in each Maasin Pride series involving ALA Gym trained boxers and Maasin City Sports Council trained fighters. Though ALA boxers have more wins, but Maasin boxers did not lag behind in the amateur series. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. |
