FACE OF THE NIGHT! By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Mon, 26 Nov 2012 Boxing is unlike any other sport. The physical, emotional and mental requirement of the sport is a personal matter. Despite the thousands watching and despite the men you trust in your corner. The reality is, it is just you and your opponent on top of that ring when the bell starts. And despite all pre-fight planning and strategy, both fighters do not have a clue of what the other might bring on fight night. Last Saturday?s bout, the fight between WBC Interim Welterweight Champ Roberto Guerrero and challenger Andre Berto was an example of that. The two boxers, the fighters engaged each other in a bonafide slug fest that tested the two individuals in that squared ring. Guerrero dropped Berto twice early in the fight and never stopped from there. He threw punches at will and with the intention to hurt all night. Berto survived the early knockdowns and utilized all means necessary to defend against his opponent?s attacks. He defended against a possessed man who brought the cannons of destruction with him. And in the process, was able to find ways to launch his own brand of punishment against Guerrero. Both fighters did not know the meaning of ?fighting in the center of the ring.? The ropes and the corner posts provided cushioning for their bodies. Guerrero brought the fight to the reluctant Berto who had no choice but to respond. They held, they wrestled, and hit each other in between those tactics in twelve grueling rounds. The result is seen in their faces. Their eyes swollen shut and both can barely see from them. Their faces twisted and mangled from the blows they received from each other. Their nose and mouth bloodied. Last Saturday?s fight was a pageantry of sorts. It was a pageantry of the sweet science. And the finality is revealed in Robert Guerrero and Andre Berto?s faces. You can reach the author at rrmaze24@aol.com Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rich Mazon . |
