NBA -- Utah Jazz thump Lakers By Joan Secuya-Medida PhilBoxing.com Fri, 09 Nov 2012 ![]() SAN FRANCISCO -- The new-look Los Angeles Lakers just couldn't get going. After notching their first win of the season -- a one one-sided 108-79 demolition of the overwhelmed Detroit Pistons last Sunday at Staples Center --- the Lakers went on the road Wednesday night and faced a Utah team that is dealing with its own struggles and had lost three straight. But at the end of an entertaining game, it was the Jazz who came out ahead, 95-86, at the Energy Solutions Arena in downtown Salt Lake City. The Jazz improved their won-lost slate to 2-3 while the wilting Lakers dropped to 1-4. The Jazz, who shot 37 of 83 field goals and 5-of-17 threes, got 18 points and 10 rebounds from 6-foot-10 center Al Jefferson while guard Mo Williams scattered 16 points and dished seven assists. Randy Foye also provided meaningful contribution from the bench, drilling 17 points including five triples. Utah capitalized on another poor Lakers start and seized a 25-17 first quarter lead. Utah kept a 65-57 bulge after three quarters and spent the better part of the fourth quarter holding back the Lakers, who attempted to make a comeback that fell short. "We are all frustrated. I'm very frustrated, too, with the simple fact that I just don't think we played the game like we talked about going into the game. We wanted to be the ones to hit first. We wanted to be the ones to play their physicality and I thought we didn't," an obviously disappointed Lakers head coach Mike Brown told NBA.com Kobe Bryant served another stellar performance with 29 points, five rebounds and four assists while big man Dwight Howard gathered 19 points and nine rebounds. But the Lakers as a whole was simply awful. They made only 25 of 74 shots (33.8 percent), four of 23 threes, and they missed a sickening 14 of 46 free throws. Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest, finished with 15 points but he made only three of 12 shots while Steve Blake, playing in place of the injured Steve Nash, came up with just six points and one assist. Blake missed eight of 10 field goals, including six clunkers from beyond the 3-point arc. Thanks to 7-footers Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol, the Lakers easily outrebounded the size-challenged Utah Jazz 48-37, but the Jazz had 21 assists to LA's 11. Also, Utah had only 12 turnovers, six fewer than the Lakers. (Joan Secuya-Medida) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Joan Secuya-Medida. ![]() |
