EARLY RESULTS FROM THE THOMAS & MACK CENTER By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 16 Sep 2012 Las Vegas, NV - The sold out Thomas & Mack Center welcomed boxing fans from all over the world to witness the most anticipated fight of the year between undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Middleweight kingpin Sergio Martinez. But before the two square off in the ring in the main event of this boxing super event, the fans at the sports arena were treated to a competitive undercard here in Las Vegas. In the opening bout of the night, Wale 22-0 (19 KOs) of Hollywood Ca, beats Puerto Rican Daniel Sostre 11-6-1 (4 KOs) via a Unanimous Decision Victory. The undefeated welterweight scored a strong victory against Sostre who put up a good effort but was clearly under matched against Omatoso. The judges score were 80-72 and two identical scores of 79-73. Michael Medina 25-3-2 (19 KOs) scored the first victory of the night for Mexico when he outclassed American James Winchester 15-4 (5 KOs) inside 8 rounds of their Super Welterweight bout. The overmatched native of Monterey, Mexico had no trouble disposing of his foe in the 2nd match of the evening. It was a sweep for Medina with scores of 80-70 in all three cards. Cleveland's Willie Nelson 18-1-1 (11 KOs) scored the first upset victory of the night by outpointing undefeated John Jackson 13-0 (12 KOs) of St. Thomas V.I. Nelson attacked Jackson from the opening bell and both fighters engaged in meaningful action right there. The American pursued Jackson from thereon, hitting his foe with hard punches. But Jackson would fight back and would not back out from the exchange, he also managed to score combos of his own. The judges awarded Nelson the fight and the vacant NABF Super Welterweight belt with scores of 96-94 x 2 and 98-92. Underdog Paul Harness 4-3-1 (3 KOs) of Kansas City aggressively opened the fight with his undefeated counterpart, Notre Dame alum Mike Lee 10-0 (6KOs) of Chicago. Lee was caught by Harness' initial salvo but Lee was able to adjust right away. Lee used effective jabbing and he followed that up with crisp combinations that found it's target on Harness' head. Lee continued that same strategy throughout the four round light heavyweight bout which earned him the 11th successive win of his career. All three judges scored it a shutout win for Lee with scores of 40-36.
