Pacquiao in 7 rounds By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 27 Oct 2006 FORMER World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Gerry Pe?alosa yesterday predicted that Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao will knock out legendary Mexican Erik “El Terrible” Morales within seven rounds in their Grand Finale rubber match at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas on Nov. 18. Pe?alosa, who arrived with his wife Goody from the United States early yesterday morning after his smashing ninth-round KO over former World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion and world’s no. 1 Mauricio Martinez, said Pacquiao was in terrific shape and was determined to win handsomely. “For Pacquiao, this is personal,” said Pe?alosa, reasoning out that because of all the talk by Morales that belittled him and his 10th-round KO in their rematch last January. Pe?alosa said he believes Morales will be troubled by his having to reduce weight to make the 130-pound limit. The flashy southpaw, who is eyeing one last world title shot as a bantamweight, said Morales “may do well in the early rounds, but after that, Manny will get him in either six or seven rounds.” Pe?alosa said that when he trained with Pacquiao doing roadwork, he simply couldn’t keep up with him. He said Pacquiao was peaking at the right time and under the disciplined training of the celebrated Freddie Roach, Pacquiao was in the best shape of his life. “Grabe talaga,” added Pe?alosa. Pe?alosa also said yesterday he is ready to fight anybody among the reigning world bantamweight champions for the title being lined up by Golden Boy Promotions either in the third week of December or early January. His confidence oozing after his spectacular win, Pe?alosa said Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez had asked him who to fight—Jhonny Gonzalez or Daniel Ponce de Leon? Pe?alosa, who dropped Martinez once in the opening round, and then again in the fourth before putting him away in the ninth in El Paso, Texas, replied: “Anybody.” Pe?alosa said he would spend a brief holiday in the country before returning to Los Angeles to resume training under Roach at his famed Wild Card Gym, where a number of Filipino boxers, led by Pacquiao, train. Emerging ring sensation Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista, who left for Los Angeles with outstanding Filipino trainer Edito “Ala” Villamor last Wednesday, will resume his preparation, also at the Wild Card Gym, for a crucial fight against Brazilian super bantamweight champion Giovanni Andrade on Dec. 2. “Pe?alosa looked very good and was in perfect condition and very sharp,” said Gomez. “He is ready for a title shot.” Both Gonzalez and Ponce de Leon are handled by Golden Boy Promotions, which also has a growing number of Filipinos in the prestigious organization owned by the great Oscar de la Hoya, led by Pacquiao, who recently signed a seven-fight deal, Pe?alosa, Bautista, Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation champion and world no.1 super flyweight Z “The Dream” Gorres and flyweight contender Diosdado Gabi.
