PINOY WOODPUSHERS BAG 57 MEDALS, AWARDS IN VIETNAM By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Tue, 19 Jun 2012 A VICTORIOUS Philippine delegation will bring home a total of 57 medals and awards which they won in the just ended 13th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships in Hue, Vietnam. Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, executive director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) under the leadership of it's chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., and secretary-general Abraham "Bambol" Tolentinom Jr. who is the delegation head of the Filipino contestants, said the Philippines won 12 golds, 36 silvers and 9 bronzes in 3 events, standard, rapid and blitz competitions. "Total medal Tally for Philippine Team is 57 medals in 3 events Standard, rapid and blitz: 12 gold, 36 Silver and 9 bronze. We broke the previous record of 23 medals last year with only 8 gold medals in 3 events in Indonesia," said GM Gonzales. "Vietnam got a total of 121 medals: 73 gold, 31 Silver, 17 Bronze. Over all the Philippine team is the second, followed by Indonesia by garnering a total of 30 medals: 12 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze. Countries participated is 9 led by Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Mongolia, India, Malaysia, Iran and China," added GM Gonzales. Winning gold medals for the country are Joel Pimentel of Bacolod City under 20 boys 2 golds in Standard and rapid, awarded an International Master and with GM norm; FM Paolo Bersamina of Pasay City - under 14 boys 2 golds- Standard and rapid; FM Austin Jacob Literatus of Davao City -under 16 boys 2 golds - Standard and Rapid; Stephen Rome Pangilinan of Manila- under 10 boys gold in rapid;FM Mari Joseph Turqueza of Quezon City - under 20 girls 1 gold in Blitz; WNM Jan Jodilyn Fronda of Manila-under 20 girls 1 gold in Blitz and Mark James Marcellana of Sta. Rosa-Laguna- Under 12 boys 1 Gold in Blitz. Silver medalists are Pangilinan, Mira Mirano of Aklan, Province- under 16 girls, Silver standard awarded Candidate Fide Woman Master; WFM Marie Antoinette San Diego of Dasmarinas, Cavite- Silver in Under 14 girls rapid; Shania Mae Mendoza of Sta. Rosa, Laguna- Silver in Under 14 girls rapid and Vince Angelo Medina of Cavite, Silver Blitz Under 16 boys. Bronze medallists are Bersamina; Marie Antoinette San Diego; Romy Fagon of Pangasinan- Bronze Standard in under 16 boys; John Daniel Lemi of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Bronze in Rapid in under 12 boys- Vigan; Janelle Mae Frayna of Legaspi City- Bronze in under 16 girls in Blitz; Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmarinas, Cavite- Bronze in rapid under 8 girls and Alexis Anne Osena of Quezon Province, Bronze in rapid under 12 girls. The country?s campaign in the tournament is supported POC president Peping Cojuangco, PSC Chairman Ritchie Garcia, NCFP President Prospero Pichay Jr., NCFP secretary General and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. and Atty. Ruel Canobas, Manager of Philippine team. The Philippine age groupers is schedule to arrive on June 21 and schedule to paid a courtesy call to PSC Chairman Ritchie Garcia at 10am.
