Pacquiao-Marquez III : Roach plans small adjustments

PhilBoxing.com

BAGUIO CITY ? Except for some minor adjustments, Manny Pacquiao?s training regimen in preparation for his coming third fight with Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez will follow the same course as when his team pitched camp here a week ago.

?I will have to make very small adjustment in his style of fighting which I readily observed when I arrived here Tuesday, ? chief trainer Freddie Roach bared yesterday . Maybe because Manny thinks, or somebody told him that Marquez doesn?t have a good jab.

?That?s a wrong notion. I told him that was wrong and what he was doing was wrong. I had to change his style a little and we will continue to change it this week,? Roach told this writer in an interview at Manor Hotel where he is staying.

?I had to tell him Marquez is a good jabber. He is one of the best jabbers in boxing today, in fact. So I told Manny, who I noticed was favoring his left like what he did in his first two fights against Marquez., I told him to use his right more and be more effective,? Roach said.

?That?s what I don?t want to happen, Manny falling back to what he?d been doing before, especially in their first two fights which did not impress many. I don?t want a repeat of that, definitely,? Roach recalled.

Roach repeated his prediction that the World Boxing Organization welterweight champion will win convincingly this time, a completion of what many believe will be a historic trilogy.
Manny fought heavier, bigger opponents after that split decision victory in the second fight. He?s stronger, faster and more mature now,? he said.

?Marquez? Well, he also fought several times after that. But his last fight was against a tricycle driver,? he said in jest. ?He hardly learned anything from that fight.?
?As to the other aspects of how we started last week, we?ll continue with them. Sparring resumes tomorrow (today) with the same frequency of four rounds against (Jorge) Linares, ? he stressed.

?On Thursday, it will be four rounds again and four rounds on Saturday. Monday, Wednesday and Friday will be with the mitts with me at eight rounds per session. Meaning will be working the mitts 24 round by the end of the week,? Roach explained.

?Manny?s running very good to regain his stamina. We will continue with that stuff daily depending on where he wants to run. Either at Burnham Park, Sta. Lucia or the oval,? he added.

The eight-division champion did his roadwork yesterday at the Philippine Sports Commission track-oval inside the historic Teachers Camp where he ran for 30 minutes and did limbering up exercises for another 20 minutes.

The same day, he was guest speaker at the Monday flag ceremony of the Philippine Public Safety College, also inside the Teachers Camp.
