A forfeiture victory over a shorthanded Iraq side Friday rekindled the Philippines? hope for a seat in the quarterfinal round of the 10th Asian Women?s Softball Championship going on in Nantou, Taiwan.

Iraq came at the Ciaoguang playing field with only seven players as four of its mainstays suffered separate injuries in their previous outings, leading the organizers to declare the Blu Girls the winners by default.

The official score is 7-0.

Standing in the way of the Filipinas, who made it here courtesy of the Philippine Sports Commission, Cebuana Lhuillier, Pera Padala, Le Soleil de Boracay Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions, to make into the page-system round is Southeast Asian Games arch-rival Thailand which they were scheduled to meet late Saturday afternoon. Only once had the Thais won over a national team in all SEA Games and Asian tournament making the Blu Girls odds on favorite to survive and advance into the next phase of competition that will determine the three teams that will represent the region in the 2011 World Championship.

Both the Philippines and Thailand tote an identical 2-2 win-loss cards in Pool A of the two-group elimination. The Blu Girls own a 14-0 abbreviated, four-inning triumph over Hong Kong. The lost to the North Koreans, 03, and South Koreans, 2-7, prior to their walk over win over the Iraquis.

Santiago was referring to a loss dealt by the Thais on a Philippine side in the elimination round of the 2005 SEA Games softball tournament, which the then Blu Girls won nevertheless.

Both the Thais and the Filipinas are using this tournament in preparation for the coming 26th SEA Games Indonesia this November. Leading Pool A is reigning Olympic Games champion Japan, which along with South Korea own a perfect 4-0 record, with North Korea running third at 3-2.
