Pacquiao?s reaction to Mayweather-Ortiz By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Sep 2011 ?It was, to say the least, unsportsmanlike,? thus was what the initial reaction of World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao to the unexpected bizarre ending of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Victor Ortiz fight held in Las Vegas. Pacquiao, the man the entire boxing community believe has the biggest chance to deal the new World Boxing Council welterweight champ his first loss, however does not believe Mayweather is to be faulted over what happened. ?No, Mayweather should not be faulted for what happened,? Pacquiao?s Canadian adviser Michael Koncz quoted the pound-for-pound king as saying. ?Manny thinks it was the young Ortiz?s immaturity and lack of experience that did him in. ? Mayweather knocked Ortiz out in the fourth round in what boxing experts? said was the most bizarre-ending fight in this era. Hall of Fame referee Joe Cortez had just deducted a point from Ortiz for intentional head butting Mayweather and had the combatants touch gloves to signal the resumption of the fight when the undefeated American threw a left and a right that sent the dethroned welterweight king, whose eyes were still glued on the ring official, down for good. Koncz, who watched the fight with Pacquiao in his room in a posh hotel in Manila, said maybe Mayweather did not violate any boxing rule, but added a ?boxer who has slightly better self respect and is proud to win ?cleanly? would not have done that.? Manny has the same observation as mine,? Koncz, who just arrived earlier in the morning from the United States said. Koncz failed to answer though when asked what chances Pacquiao has of winning when the two finally meet in the future, simply saying the Filipino ring icon and his team are focused on his coming fight against Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez this coming November. Ilocos Sur Governor Luis ?Chavit? Singosn, a close ally of the eight-division belt owner, had a different view, saying Mayweather cheated Ortiz of a win. ?Kalokohan yung resulta. Daya,? Singson said in a telephone interview. ?Pero mabuti na rin yun para pag naglaban ang dalawa siguradong mas maganda. Kesa naman sa natalo si Mayweather, baka din a talaga matutuloy na magharap ang dalawa.? Gov. Singson?s observation was echoed by businessman-sportsman Danny Dimalanta. Dante Silverio, owner-coach of the now-defunct Toyota ballclub in the PBA shared Paquiao?s view.?Very regrettable that Mayweather had to win in that manner. Very unsportsmanlike.? ?Very unprofessional,? was how Tagaytay City Mayor Bambol Tolentino, Philippine Integrated Cycling Association president, viewed Mayweather?s victory. Nonoy Neri, Pacquiao?s assistant traiber cum dietician said: ?After touching gloves, ibig sabihin umpisa na uli ang laban. Nagulangan, nautakan. Talagang bata pa si Ortiz. ?Masyadong mabait. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Eddie Alinea. |
