OLD MAN CORTEZ, INEXPERIENCE AND A DIRTY MAYWEATHER SPELLED ORTIZ?S DOOM

PhilBoxing.com

Las Vegas, NV: I can almost see everyone writing what referees tell boxers at the start of each fight - ?protect yourself at all times.?

Young Ortiz forgot to do that and dirty Mayweather took advantage of it and hit Ortiz while Ortiz was still focused on the referee and totally distracted.

The two shots that Ortiz took put him down for good.

It could be well be the fault of Ortiz but that would not have happened if an old man is not the third person in the ring. Surely, nothing like that would have happened if a younger referee like Kenny Bayless was the third person in the ring.

After Cortez penalized Ortiz for his attempt to head butt Mayweather, he failed to separate the fighters as a good referee should have done to re-start the fight cleanly. That of course does not speak too well of Cortez who is a ?Hall of Fame? referee.

Maybe Cortez was just getting really old and his reflexes and decision making have slowed down, but Ortiz should have paid better attention to Mayweather rather than to Cortez.

Mayweather who is far experienced than Ortiz in all sorts of rough housing in the ring and he recognized that opportunity to hit Ortiz while his guards are down.

But that is boxing and Mayweather was perhaps ?with-in? the parameters of the rules when he threw those punches.

However, a boxer who has slightly better self respect and is proud to win ?cleanly? would not have done that.

But then again, who can expect that from a man who will even curse his own father in front of world wide TV?

One interesting aspect about the fight was the fact that Cortez had not yet given the instructions to both fighters to continue the fight. He has not said ?box? to re-start the fight.

Yet, the dirty Mayweather hit Ortiz.

In fact, Cortez was so surprised to see Ortiz fall. He never saw the two punches that Mayweather threw.

That in it self could have given Cortez the opportunity to dis-qualify Mayweather.

But like I said, the guy is getting old and his reflexes have slowed down. Before he could think, the fight was over and Ortiz lost his crown but surely has learned a huge lesson.
