MARQUEZ TO STICK WITH COUNTERPUNCHING TACTIC

PhilBoxing.com

Still insisting that he should have won his first two fight with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, world lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez said he is not deviating from what he knows best.

?No, I will still count on my counterpunching ability, the same weapon I used during our first fights, which I believe I won,? the 38-year-old Marquez said in brief interview before retiring following another hectic day Sunday.

?I won both fights so why change tactics. It?s the same style of fighting that brought me to where I am today. I will live and die on it,? he said through an interpreter. ?Well, those fights are already in the past. We are in the present and on Nov. 12th I?m going to raise my hands in victory.?

?But As I have been saying, I will be facing a new Manny Pacquiao comes fight day so me and my trainer has already started improving on it and at the same time make some adjustments on things I have to improve myself,? Marquez, who left Manila via Delta Air flight 172, disclosed.

Marquez, who had been in Manila since last week to attend with Pacauiao, the opening leg of the four-city, 25,000-mile Press Tour to promote the Nov. 12 Act III of their trilogy, likewise, downplayed any effects the catchweight 144 pounds, which is at least nine pounds heavier than his 135-pound lightweight category, will have on his counterpunching ability.

?Maybe they?re thinking of my fight against (Floyd) Mayweather where they said I was beaten decisively. But this is a different fight. I am fighting a man who likes to fight. Mayweather did not want to fight. He kept on running all the 12 rounds we face each other, ? he reasoned out.

"I don't think the weight will be a problem. I'm working with people who are going to help me achieve a good weight without enormously losing my speed and strength to win the fight,? he said.

"Everyone knows I'm always well prepared for my fights and this is no exception. For a fight like this we have to work hard and put together a great game plan. I am preparing myself for a great fight and I'm going to win the world championship for Mexico, Marquez vowed. " Marquez thanked the Filipino people for the warm reception and the hospitality his hosts accorded him since his arrival Thursday last week .

?Filipinos are wonderful people. They?re very kind. The reception and the hospitality they gave me and my team from the time we arrived until the time we leave is one of the best we receive in my boxing career,? Marquez said.

Sunday morning he even took the cudgel for Pacquiao in a mass in their honor at the Manila Cathedral where the Filipino World Boxing Organization welterweight champion was a no show prompting the Mexican ring idol to jokingly said, ?I was the only one blessed by the priest, so maybe I will really win.?

Marquez and his team on board a five-vehicle convoy were escorted by motorcycle-riding policemen in a motorcade from the Manila Hotel to the Ninoy International Airport where they took the plane to New York where he will be joining Pacquiao, who left Sunday evening for the second stop of the tour Tuesday.
