RING MAGAZINE UNDECIDED AS YET ON POUND-FOR-POUND NO.1

PhilBoxing.com

With some media pressure building up in the US for light middleweight champion Sergio Martinez to replace current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao in the prestigious Ring Magazine PFP rankings, no decision has yet been made.

Ring Magazine Editor-in-Chief Nigel Collins informed the Inquirer that ?nothing has been decided yet. We will be meeting tomorrow -Tuesday, March 15- (which will be Wednesday in Manila) to do our weekly ratings update.?

Collins explained that the ?biggest difference between the divisional and pound-for-pound ratings is that divisional ratings are objective and based almost entirely on results within the particular weight class.?

On the other hand Collins said ?pound-for-pound ratings are subjective with more weight given to opinion, potential and results from all divisions in which the fighter has competed.?

Martinez who was earlier voted 2010 ?Fighter of the Year? by the Boxing Writers Association of America over three-time winner and BWAA ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao scored an impressive 8th round TKO over Sergiy ?Razor? Dzinziruk to win the WBC Diamond Belt and retain the Ring Magazine belt.

The win together with a sensational 1st round knockout of Paul Williams in an earlier fight has enhanced the stature of Martinez. Some writers believe the Argentine?s recent wins has enabled him to stake his claim to dislodging Pacquiao as the pound-for-pound king.

Meamtime, Pacquiao didn?t even bother about his pound-for-pound status and went about training for his showdown against three-time world champion Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand on May 7.

Pacquiao?s strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza is pleasantly surprised at the condition of Pacquiao two days into his Baguio City training camp.

Ariza told the Inquirer that they got up early Tuesday morning, ?had a good run, hit some hills for some 25 minutes and trained in the afternoon.?

The conditioning guru who has worked closely with trainer Freddie Roach to turn Pacquiao into a devastating fighting machine said the ?Fighter of the Decade? went ten rounds on the punch-mitts and one round on the heavy bag.?

Ariza said he was ?kind of surprised that Manny is skipping his rest breaks.?

Lanky David Rodela and tough Shaun Porter will arrive next week to begin sparring with Pacquiao while Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is scheduled to arrive on March 21 to check on how his prized possession is coming along.

WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan who is also trained by Roach is in Baguio and showed up at the gym where Pacquiao trains although it?s been made clear Khan will not spar with Pacquiao or train alongside him.

Khan (24-1, 17 KO?s) will defend his title against undefeated Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO?s) at the MEN Arena in Manchester on April 16.
