WBC PRESIDENT SULAIMAN DECREES THREE DAYS OF MOURNING FOR THE LATE RUDY SALUD By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 08 Mar 2011 World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman has officially decreed three days of mourning in the boxing world and offered his condolences to the family and friends of onetime WBC secretary general and chairman of its ratings committee, lawyer Rodrigo ?Rudy? Salud. Salud who crafted the Constitution and By Laws of the WBC passed away on Monday afternoon in Manila. He was a longtime friend of Sulaiman who, when informed by the Inquirer of Salud?s condition which suddenly took a turn for the worse on Sunday, said ?I am visiting the Virgin of Guadalupe Shrine to pray for my dear friend Rodrigo." In a conversation with this reporter on Tuesday morning, Sulaiman said ?I really feel terribly, terribly sad and I just pray to God that he is resting in everlasting peace. I was always thinking of him.? Sulaiman said Salud was ?my mentor and when I saw him work at the conventions and saw how well he led the meetings and guided the discussions in style, I really learned very much from him. He was such a good man.? At the WBC Convention in Manila in 2006 Sulaiman handed Salud the WBC?s ?Lifetime Achievement Award.? Sulaiman noted that Salud was "the lifetime honorary secretary general of the WBC." A press release by the WBC noted that "it was our current leader Jose Sulaiman Chagnon who succeded Mr. Salud as the secretary general when Professsor Ramon Velazquez was president." The World Boxing Council in an official statement said Salud was "one of the most distinguished leaders of the World Boxing Council based on principles. impartiality, perseverance and a strong attachment to WBC rules.? It noted that Justiniano Montano Jr and Salud, who were also chairman and secretary general of the Games and Amusements Board were elected to the WBC's top positions "in difficult times when the organization became inactive for almost a year when Luis Spota was president." The statement said the WBC President, the Board of Governors and all members of the institution "wish that this great Philippine?s soul rests in everlasting peace and hopes that God will give a prompt resignation to such deep sorrow to his family and boxing and basketball fans; as Mr. Salud was a leader of the sport of basketball for many years." Salud wrote the Constitution and By Laws of the Philippiine Basketball Association and was its Legal Counsel when the league was founded in 1975 with the distinguished Leo Prieto as its first Commissioner. Salud served the pro league with distinction until 1992. It was during his stint as Commissioner from 1988 ? 1992 that the PBA reached new heights of success.
