THE PACQUIAO MEDIA DAY ? SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW?

PhilBoxing.com

Hollywood, CA:- Top Rank early Wednesday afternoon held the only ?Media Day? for Manny Pacquiao in the Los Angeles area.

As usual, a horde of media people from all over the world were present. The event was supposed to be held at 1:00 PM but the Pacman had other things to attend to so he did not make it to the gym until just a bit after 2:00 PM. The long wait frustrated some of the media people who were inside the gym which had fast became an oven. It was hot but tolerable.

The media people made use of the time by interviewing Freddie Roach and Bob Arum. Needless to say, Uncle Bob had plenty to say but nothing that he hasn?t said before. Ditto for Freddie Roach.

When Pacquiao finally appeared, the buzz in the gym changed. People got excited at the prospect of talking to and seeing Pacquiao in his only media day in the LA area.

Pacquiao quickly changed from his street clothes to his fighting outfit complemented with brand new Nike shoes with his name on them.

Thereafter, he climbed the ring and with publicist Fred Sternberg helping him around the ring, Pacquiao went around doing interview with just about anyone with a microphone.
It was same as the old routine done in the past fights, but still it?s exciting to see him address the media.

After the interviews, Alex Ariza came up the ring and started to help Pacquiao with his exercises. As usual, Ariza did his thing and got Pacquiao ready for the mitts.

Then after Ariza?s exercises, Freddie Roach came up the ring and done his body armor. To the delight of the media people, he did not put on the old green trainer?s mitts. Instead, he put on metal hand armor ala Knights of Sir Galahad. That of course drew a big laugh from the press and Pacquiao himself.

After a photo opportunity with the metal armor, Roach donned his usual green trainer?s mitts and the show begun.

Pacquiao hit the mitts with Roach for several rounds with Buboy Fernandez keeping time. I have seen the two do the same routine several times but none-the-less it was still a delight to see them do their thing. One thing that seemed apparent was the body shots they concentrated on. But given Margarito?s height that is no surprise.

After the mitts Pacquiao proceed to do the rest of the training regimen and called it a day. All in all, there was really nothing new on the media day but still it was something to experience. Pacquiao and Roach are such great entertainers and they are always a pleasure to see them do their thing.
