NIETES LEAVES L.A. FOR MANILA By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Tue, 17 Aug 2010 LOS ANGELES ? Filipino world champion Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes, after successfully defending his title for the 4th time last Saturday in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico against a game Mario 'El Dragoncito' Rodriguez, leaves here tonight via Philippine Airlines and will arrive Manila early morning on Wednesday. Accompanying Nietes are trainers Edmund and Edito Vilamor and ALA Promotions Vice-Presdient Dennis Canete. High ranking sports and government officials are set meet Nietes, currently the only other Filipino world boxing champion beside pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, at the Ninoy Aquino International airport upon his arrival. Team Nietes returned to LA yesterday afternoon after a tiring trip from Guasave via Los Mochis and Hermosillo in Mexico. Earlier today, Nietes and his team were treated with a sumptuous lunch by long time boxing supporters Ronald Sanchez and wife Charm and their families at Hop Li restaurant in Chinatown Los Angeles. Nietes told his hosts that he intend to defend his belt for a long time. Nietes is now the longest active Filipino world champion holding on to his belt for three years by Sep. 30. He is also bound to overtake Filipino boxing great Ben Villafor as the fourth longest running Filipino world champion (2 years, 11 months) and is in hot pursuit to the records established by other Filipino boxing greats Luisito Espinosa (3 years, 5 months), Jesus Salud (6 years, 11 months) and Gabriel 'Flash' Elorde (7 years, 3 months). Nietes now holds the distinction as only Filipino boxer to defend his belt three times inside Mexico. Canete said that Nietes will most likely return to the ring in late November or early December this year either in Bacolod or Cebu. ?I think the fight will most likely be in Bacolod. We prefer it to be held in Bacolod because Nietes is from there and this will be a great opportunity for the people of Bacolod to witness a world championship event featuring their very own world champion,? Canete said.
