OMAR NINO ROMERO?S MANAGER STILL HURTING BADLY

PhilBoxing.com

San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico:- A few hours after the weigh-in this afternoon, WBC announced that the ?Rules Meeting? will be held at the La Venta Hotel Hacienda.

It was a good call because most of the teams are staying at the said hotel and walking down to the patio area will be a breeze.

The meeting was supposed to be held at 3:00 PM but it seems that Mexicans have so many things in common with Filipinos. They have this thing about being late.

At any rate, the meeting started about 45 minutes later at the hotel main lobby. It was good because just before the meeting begun, a huge thunderstorm with lightning came by dropping pea size hails in the process. We would have been soaked if we were at the patio.

The meeting went very smoothly with a WBC representative conducting the proceedings (in the place of Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC Exe. Vice President) until it got to the part that defined who was supposed to given authority to stop the fight if needed be in case of fouls.

The argument got a bit heated so the issue was put aside by the WBC rep who decided that a consultation with Sulaiman was necessary to clear the issue.

With that the discussion went on and each remaining rule one by one was discussed an agreed upon by everyone.

Thereafter, each championship team was given a copy of the rules.

It was then that all the people around listening to the meeting found out that Nino Romero?s manager to this day harbor a grudge on Team Mayol.

In fact it became personal when he pointed to each of us from the Team Mayol and said point blank:- ?You guys are cheaters. You cheated twice already and I would like the WBC to tell you to sign and agree to the rules."

When he said that, he was not joking. He had fire in his eyes and a lot of hatred to boot!

The guy should have realized that we were required to sign the rules anyway. So what was the problem?

Mayol's trainer, Jesse Arevalo took issue of the guy?s statement and gave him an earful too.

Only timely intervention from Mike Koncz and the WBC rep prevented anything untoward from happening.

Apparently, the manager?s main beef was the fact that he believes Mayol was not really hurt by Nino when he KO?d him with an illegal punch. He feels Mayol should have continued fighting even after the illegal blow that clearly hurt Mayol to give Nino the chance to win the title.

Even after the ring doctor pronounced Mayol unfit to continue!

Clearly, the guy having no medical background much less the opportunity to ask Mayol how he felt as he laid on the canvas, so he thought Mayol was acting.

In fact, that was the basis of his appeal to the WBC after the first Mayol fight was changed by WBC from a Nino win by KO to a technical draw. The appeal was eventually denied by WBC because TV replays indicate that Nino hit Mayol with a low blow and then when Mayol reacted in pain, he chased Mayol and stepped on his foot and then delivered the late blow in spite of the referee yelling for him to stop.

From this writer?s perspective, the Nino Romero manager is a sour puss. He is unprofessional and an embarrassment to boxing. He had no right to accuse the visiting team of such. What a perfect host!

Pointing fingers at people and saying that they are cheaters without a clear evidence is a personal insult and has no place in boxing. In other places, that act can clearly lead to a legal action.

Team Mayol does not expect an apology from him. Besides, coming from him, it will never be heartfelt anyway and will be totally meaningless.

But we forgive the guy. How can we not, when he is simply classless and not in our league.

Today he is still hurting. I wonder how he will be after tomorrow?s fight?

I guess he would still be hurting. Pity!
