MEPRANUM TO GO AFTER WBO FLYWEIGHT TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Apr 2010 Richie Mepranum. A cracking unanimous decision victory over undefeated and hard-hitting flyweight contender Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez has put Richie Mepranum in line for a shot at the vacant WBO title. ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao?s MP Promotions handles Mepranum who has strung together some impressive victories abroad. His latest win over Marquez who had 18 big knockouts in 25 victories in the main event of a Top Rank Promotions fight card on the eve of the Pacquiao showdown with Joshua Clottey at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium helped immensely in boosting Mepranum?s stock as a worthy title contender. The 22 year old southpaw who has a record if 16-2-1 with only three knockouts is an excellent boxer who can take a punch and counters particularly well. Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz told us they are negotiating for a fight for the title being relinquished by Argentine Omar Narvaez who is moving up in weight. Prior to the Marquez bout Mepranum scored back-to-back decisions in the US beating Cesar Lopez on December 6, 2008 and then scoring a six round split decision over Ernie Marquez on November 14, 2009. Mepranum once held the WBO Oriental flyweight title which he won via a twelve round unanimous decision of Tanzania?s Juma Fundi in Maasim, Sarangani on June 14, 2008. Sarangani is where Pacquiao is seeking a congressional seat in the May 10 elections and its where Pacquiao?s wife Jinkee hails from. Meantime, Koncz said Rodel Mayol will defend his WBC light flyweight title against former champion Oman Nino Romero in a rematch to be held in Mexico on June 19.
