SHAW SURGES AS CAPITO STUMBLES IN TITLE DEFENCE | 2025 UK OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP PhilBoxing.com Fri, 09 May 2025 ![]() Day Three of the 2025 UK Open Pool Championship saw fortunes shift at the Telford International Centre, as defending champion Robbie Capito faltered in his title defence while home favourite Jayson Shaw continued his dominant march toward a maiden UK Open crown. Now in its fourth edition, the UK Open runs from May 6–11 with the first four days streamed live on WNT TV, before the final stages are broadcast on Sky Sports across the UK & Ireland. LIVE SCORES/BRACKETS SPECTATOR TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE Capito endured a rocky start to the day, suffering a 9-3 defeat to Poland’s Konrad Juszczyszyn that sent him to the Losers’ Bracket. With his championship hanging by a thread, the Hong Kong star bounced back with a resounding 9-2 victory over Hubert Lopotko to stay in contention for the single elimination rounds. Meanwhile, Jayson Shaw kept the home crowd roaring with a clinical 9-4 win over fellow Brit Tony Burton, booking his place in the Last 64. By contrast, Skyler Woodward’s route became more complicated. The former Mosconi Cup captain fell 9-5 to rising Filipino sensation AJ Manas, who capitalised on key errors to deliver a breakout win. Woodward responded in his following match, grinding out a 9-7 victory over fellow American Nathan Childress to survive another day. Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp became the first player to officially reach the Last 64, easing past Vietnam’s Nguyen Anh Tuan 9-4. He was soon joined by Carlo Biado, who coasted to victory after Albania’s Besar Spahiu conceded at 7-0. Joshua Filler, the reigning European Open champion, kept fans on edge with a trademark comeback. Trailing 5-3 to Poland’s Mateusz Śniegocki, the German turned up the pressure with a 6-rack blitz to claim a 9-5 win. Denmark’s Mickey Krause, a former European Open champion, also found redemption after a tough finish in Sarajevo this year, breezing past Vietnam’s Phuong Nam Pham 9-4 to return to the Last 64 stage. There was disappointment, however, for former UK Open champion Eklent Kaçi, whose campaign came to a premature end. The Albanian was sent to the Losers’ Bracket after a 9-5 defeat to Kosovo’s Fitim Haradinaj, and couldn’t recover against England’s Fraser Patrick, who held firm for another 9-5 win to eliminate the former champ. Spain’s David Alcaide staged one of the day’s great escapes. After losing to the Spaniard Salvador Garcia, 'El Matador' faced Chinese Taipei’s Kuo Po Cheng in a tense thriller. Kuo led for most of the match, but Alcaide clawed back to force a hill-hill decider. A dry break in the final rack looked to seal his fate—until Kuo missed a 2–9 combo, leading him to concede and for Alcaide to book his spot in the Last 64. Last 64 Draw The Last 64 is now confirmed for the 2025 UK Open Pool Championship, with the pick of the round including a thrilling encounter between defending champion Robbie Capito and Reyes Cup MVP Aloysius Yapp. Other stand out ties include Carlo Biado against Mieszko Fortunski, and Jayson Shaw against Chang Jung-Lin.
