CAPITO CRASHES OUT IN TITLE DEFENCE AS YAPP ENDS UK OPEN REIGN | 2025 UK OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP

PhilBoxing.com

Robbie Capito’s title defence came to a bitter end in the Last 64 of the 2025 UK Open Pool Championship, falling 10-7 to close friend and Singaporean standout Aloysius Yapp, who delivered a clinical performance to derail the Hong Kong star’s hopes of back-to-back UK Open glory.

Now in its fourth edition, the UK Open runs from May 6–11, with the final stages broadcast across the UK & Ireland on Sky Sports, and across USA on WNT TV.

Yapp reached the hill first in their tightly contested match, but Capito dug in, fighting to stay alive in the tournament. A clever safety on the two-ball looked to swing momentum in Capito’s favour—but Yapp responded with a sublime jump shot to pot the two, clean up the rack, and seal a 10-7 victory. The loss marked a painful early exit for Capito in his first-ever title defence.

Another big name to bow out was former UK Open champion Joshua Filler, who breezed past compatriot Can Salim in the Last 64, but fell 10-8 to American Tyler Styer in the Last 32. Styer kept the pressure high throughout, stunning the European Open champion with a composed and errorless display.

Meanwhile, Jayson Shaw and Mickey Krause—both recent Mosconi Cup standouts—powered into the Last 16. Shaw was in imperious form, dispatching two top talents from Chinese Taipei: first Chang Jung-Lin, followed by Lu Hui Chan in the Last 32. Krause followed his former captain’s lead, staging a gritty 10-8 comeback win against Spain’s David Alcaide before cruising to a 10-4 victory over Marc Bijsterbosch.

Fresh off dismantling the reigning champion, Aloysius Yapp then faced fellow Singaporean Nicholas Tann in the Last 32, producing a confident 10-5 win to continue his charge. Joining him in the Last 16 are his Reyes Cup teammates Carlo Biado and Duong Quoc Hoang, who each showed remarkable resilience under pressure.

Biado survived a hill-hill clash against last year’s finalist Mieszko Fortuński, then outclassed Szymon Kural 10-6 to stay in the hunt. Duong Quoc Hoang, seeking revenge over Dean Shields—who knocked him out on home soil at the 2024 Hanoi Open—got his payback with a sharp performance in the Last 64. He followed it up with a composed 10-4 win over rising Filipino talent AJ Manas in the Last 32.

The first player to book his spot in tomorrow’s play was Jonas Souto, who broke into the Last 16 for the first time after a long three-year wait. The young Spaniard delivered a strong performance, first dispatching Arseni Sevastyanov 10-5 before storming past Austria’s Mario He with a dominant 10-3 win. Matching that momentum was Polish star Wiktor Zieliński, who cruised past compatriot Radosław Babica 10-2 and then dismantled Imran Majid 10-1 in back-to-back clinical displays.

With just 16 players remaining, the stage is set for an intense battle as the UK Open Pool Championship enters its final stretch.
